Same here. I speak Japanese (maybe more Osaka ben than standard Japanese, since my husband is from Osaka and he's my main source of Japanese language), we only speak Japanese at home, and am coached in Japanese too (even though one of the coaches speaks a little bit of English and I've had to ask her what that word the other coach used means), but I'm semi illiterate in writing it, reading it ....and I see no reason to brute force these skills into my brain by intense studying. I have zero time for it, my time is either for sport practicing, resting from all the hard practice and for my work. Even though I understand everything what my husband, in laws and coaches say (with a rare unknown word that I'll ask on the spot what it means), I can't watch any Japanese video/film without subtitles since I can't understand the majority of what they're saying. Mind blowing to me too.
