Ocasio-Cortez says Trump shut down Greene’s Senate ambitions, spurring ‘revenge tour’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said Monday that President Trump shut down the Senate ambitions of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), causing some backlash from the Georgia Republican against the White House.

“Here’s some tea for you,” Ocasio-Cortez said during an Instagram livestream. “MTG, people are like, ‘Oh my God, she’s saying all these things, like, what’s gotten into her lately?’ ‘Oh, like, she’s bucking against Trump, she’s bucking against the administration.’”

“Marjorie Taylor Greene wanted to run for Senate in Georgia. She wanted to run for Senate earlier this year in the state of Georgia, she wanted to be the Republican nominee for Senate. So, she was gearing up for that statewide race, and Trump told her no,” the New York Democrat added. 

“Trump said no, and the White House and Trump Land shut down Marjorie Taylor Greene’s personal ambitions to run for Senate, and she has been on a revenge tour ever since.”

In May, Greene announced that she would not enter Georgia’s Senate race next year to challenge incumbent Sen. Jon Ossoff (D).

“Even with a few good Republicans in the Senate, nothing changes. So no, Jon Ossoff isn’t the real problem. He’s just a vote. A pawn. No different than the Uniparty Republicans who skip key votes to attend fundraisers and let our agenda fail,” Greene said in a post on the social platform X at the time.

Greene has said she’s accepted Trump might not be pleased with her because of her recent criticism of her party.

“I do love him,” Greene said, talking about the president, on “The View” on Tuesday.

Greene has also said her party is going to lose the lower chamber of Congress if the cost of living does not go down. The Georgia Republican said in an interview with Semafor published last month that she could not “see into the future, but I see Republicans losing the House if Americans are continuing to go paycheck to paycheck.”

“They’ll definitely be going into the midterms looking through the lens of their bank account,” she added.

“I have already explained in a lengthy post that I have no interest in serving in the U.S. Senate. Look at the Senate right now, it’s a total mess,” Greene said in an emailed statement to The Hill on Tuesday night.

The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.
