We are delighted to announce another step forward in bringing innovative science out of the lab and into the world with the launch of Brigid Bio, a new spin-out developing treatments that use antibodies to fight dangerous fungal infections - especially those that are resistant to current medicines. Founded by the University's Professor Carol Munro, a medical mycology expert in the Aberdeen Fungal Group, with Dr Soumya Palliyil and Professor Andy Porter, innovators in antibody generation who lead the Scottish Biologics Facility, the technology has the potential to transform the healthcare of critically ill patients around the world. http://abdn.io/1zT

Today we’re pleased to share our Clinical Academics Summit statement, signed by over 40 organisations 🤝 An alarming decline in clinical academic posts threatens the UK’s ability to develop new treatments and remain a global leader in health research ⚠️ Clinical academics are vital in connecting research and patient care – shaping research priorities through frontline experience and bringing new scientific discoveries straight to patients 🧑‍⚕️ ✨ Earlier this year, we convened leaders from universities, research funders, industry partners, the NHS and Government at a summit to commit to action to help reverse this trend. The statement of ambition and intent seeks to address the OSCHR reports’ recommendation to increase the number of permanent clinical academic posts, year-on-year. Can you help transform the future of prostate cancer screening? The Institute of Cancer Research, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, and Imperial College London are teaming up for the i4i PRODICT® study, funded by the NIHR Invention for Innovation Programme. The study has been developed to see how people respond to a new saliva-based DNA test that looks for both common and rare genetic changes. The study will help researchers estimate a person's risk of getting prostate cancer and understand how this risk varies across different ethnic backgrounds. The study is looking to recruit: 🟢 1,000 people with a prostate (People with a prostate is defined as people born with male reproductive organs) 🟢 Aged 40-55 🟢 People from either Black African or Black African-Caribbean, White European, South Asian or East Asian backgrounds If you are interested, you can contact the study team using the details below. You might receive information about the study from your local GP surgery, if they are supporting this study. If you're eligible, you will be sent a DNA collection saliva kit. It's quick and easy and will help us shape the future of prostate cancer screening. Participants found to be at higher risk will be invited for annual prostate cancer screening for three years. If treatment is needed, it will be available at The Royal Marsden or your local cancer centre. With your help, we can develop faster and kinder prostate cancer screenings for everyone. A new health innovation programme has been launched, backed by up to £85m from the government and Lilly. Funding for this competition is from DSIT (£50m) and Lilly (£35m) via grant. The programme is delivered by Innovate UK and will take innovative, community-based approaches to delivering holistic weight management support, integrated into the existing health system – without placing further strain on services. With obesity costing the UK health service more than £11bn each year, impacting the lives of millions, action to tackle the condition is urgently needed. The programme will help to demonstrate new ways of accessing support for people living with obesity to manage their weight and improve their health, testing better ways for people to get the care and services they need. 💡 £10 million has been awarded to a new UK-wide partnership investigating innovative healthcare nanotechnologies. The initiative, funded by EPSRC, will unite researchers at Barts Cancer Institute (Queen Mary University of London), King's College London and University of Leeds. Using total-body PET imaging, the team will track how nanomedicines move within the body with unprecedented sensitivity, helping to improve tumour targeting and avoid unintended accumulation and side effects. BCI’s Professor Jane Sosabowski and Dr Jennifer Young will lead a £1m project studying radiolabelled nanomedicines. At AstraZeneca UK, we believe that reducing the environmental burden of respiratory care starts with optimising disease management and improving patient outcomes. It’s also critical we look at how we can reduce the climate impact of our medicines as part of our Ambition Zero Carbon strategy. Inhaler emissions account for approximately 3% of the NHS carbon footprint, with the propellant used in pressurised metered dose inhalers (pMDIs) responsible for majority of these. To address this challenge and in line with our commitment to sustainable science, we are transitioning our pMDI portfolio to a next-generation propellant with near zero global warming potential vs that used in current inhalers. This transition will allow clinicians to continue to select the most appropriate treatment for their patients while reducing the impact of respiratory diseases on the environment. However, tackling inhaler emissions alone is not enough. Optimising disease management and keeping patients out of hospital is key to delivering sustainable respiratory care.
