Why would Nigveri want to be taken more seriously, is it because she's over shadowed by her more socially endowed sis? I guess jealousy is at play here.

I don't think the locals would view her as something to laugh at but rather something to worship. I think to imagine that she's a part of the local town's mythology and has something to do with luck or something.

The local town has a old legend about black kitties and luck. They say there is a mythical creature who stands like a human and is a woman covered in black fur. Unlike other black kitties, she brings in good luck and holds enlighting knowledge to those who don't scare her off. 

The legend existed befure Blackchan was born and isn't a local to that town, but she matches the same description fur that legend and the locals hope to be in her presence someday.

To be entirely fair, fried chicken is pretty popular with every demographic I can think of.  Fur that matter, Chinese and Japanese people have boundless enthusiasm fur watermelons.  I can't keep all the stereotypes straight.  It's confusing.
