The Russian government has blocked access to MyAnimeList, citing “systematic placement of materials propagating non-traditional sexual relations and/or preference”.
Russia’s federal media regulator Roskomnadzor slotted MyAnimeList onto its national blacklist, effectively shutting the site to Russian users. According to state-media-reported comments, the reason given was MyAnimeList’s alleged “extremist” LGBTQ+ content.
MyAnimeList is a global hub for anime and manga, with around 20 million users. The platform offered discussion forums, ratings, and media for all kinds of content — including, it seems, works that Russia now deems unacceptable.
Roskomnadzor told the Tokyo-based site the ban could be lifted if MyAnimeList removed the content considered unlawful in Russia.
Russia has a long track record of censoring content: previous bans of anime titles like Tokyo Ghoul and Death Note have been justified on the grounds of violence or “harm to minors.” But in this case the stated reason is explicitly the propagation of “non-traditional sexual relations”.
What this tells us is that when a community claims victimhood yet simultaneously applies extreme pressure and intolerance onto platforms, it can trigger backlash or repression even in unexpected places. When an ideology becomes more about enforcing morality than about individual rights, the “harassed minority” label starts to unravel.

I can’t say that I fancy the standard Russian mentalities much, or rather, I’m glad I don’t live there. However, the social side of MAL (let’s try not to complain about entries on a database site that picks everything) has certainly taken a big far-left turn over the last decade. I used to commentate nearly daily for a long time and even contributed sometimes until autumn 2018 or so, but this whole “This shounen/seinen anime that spends only 90% of its runtime on plot and has the heroines liking the protagonist after one arc is superficial, but this shoujo/josei anime spending 10% of its runtime on plot and having the highly stereotypical guys instantly fall for a boring girl is a masterpiece” hypocrisy was becoming unbearable. Sadly, this problem has kept getting bigger and bigger from my recent observation. It’s still a very good database site; just don’t bother being part of its community if you aren’t biased toward BL/Danmei/josei/shoujo anime.
