Ibn Khaldun, the great African scholar, had also presented this very idea — how nomadic groups come to dominate civilizations. He explained that the people of the steppes possess stronger asabiyyah (group solidarity) than city dwellers — meaning they are more united and loyal to one another, whereas urban populations are individualistic and capitalist in nature. Thank you, professor. We’re really proud of you.

The overarching lesson to be learned from Jiang's teaching is that for most of human history, we lived peacefully and co-operatively. War and conquest is a culture imposed upon societies by a secretive and manipulative power mad elite. We have forgotten who we are.

I think it's incredible that in one class with Professor Jiang, you can learn more about world history and how human civilizations evolved than you would in 12 years of school.

It’s wild to think that the Americas could’ve had their own “steppe empires” if horses hadn’t gone extinct after the last Ice Age. The Great Plains are basically the same environment as the Eurasian steppes—open grasslands perfect for mobility, raiding, and mounted warfare. Once horses came back with Europeans, tribes like the Comanche became full-blown cavalry powers within a century. If they’d had a few thousand years of that head start, North America might’ve seen its own Mongol- or Hunnic-style empires rise from the plains. History really does come down to what survives the Ice Age.
