Naturalization in Chicago

Question

Hello, I'm looking for naturalization records from Cook County, IL between 1920 and 1935. I wonder if anyone has an idea how to search faster?

I made an application to USCIS but ofc it will take like a year to return. Then I read USCIS only has federal court data? I don't know if the naturalization occurred in federal or state court.

The period of time is relatively short, how to find all naturalization records from federal or state courts between these dates? Can some pro give me a research strategy?

You can search for Cook County naturalizations up to 1929 here. If your relative had a name that was difficult to spell, you might try searching with just the first few letters:

The Cook County courts stopped doing naturalizations in 1929. Many of these various county court naturalizations are also indexed in the same collections of U.S. District Court naturalization index cards (even though they were county court naturalizations) in Chicago, available at Ancestry and FamilySearch:

If you're comfortable sharing your ancestor's details, readers here will be happy to help you look in other places.

If your ancestor arrived in the U.S. after 1906, their passenger list might be annotated with a certificate of arrival lookup and date, which can give you a better idea when they naturalized. (However, you can't look up naturalization records by certificate of arrival number.)

Thanks! I tried searching for last name only in the Cook County database, but didn't find anything. Same with the Ancestry link :/

I know the name was Wilhelm Nienaber, he arrived in New York in 1925, and my grandfather was born in 1930. He had a WW2 military card from the US (from later than grandpa's birth) so I think he must have naturalized?? If possible I would like to find out if he naturalized before or after grandpa was born. They lived in Illinois for 2 generations so I think it's likely that he was naturalized there, but there's no proof of that to be sure.

This sounds like it was probably a draft registration. All male U.S. residents of the appropriate age (not just citizens) had to register for the draft.

Can you share a 1930 or 1940 census record you've found for this family? That should indicate their naturalization status. Although that's not always accurate on census records, sometimes it can offer clues.

I know the name was Wilhelm Nienaber, he arrived in New York in 1925

The Wilhelm Nienaber who arrived in 1925 settled in Gaylord, Michigan and was naturalized there in 1933, according to this later departing passenger list, who I'm confident is for the same person:

This Wilhelm Nienaber never lived in Chicago, as far as I can tell.
