The Outer Worlds 2 Is Entirely for Game Mechanics Nerds
Do you like to make different “builds” in video games? Do you like to dig into RPG systems all the way down to the bottom just to see what you can break? Are you thrilled by the concept of navigating inventory menus, or facing dozens of different skill checks on your vast adventure?
Then you might love Obsidian’s new game The Outer Worlds 2. However, if you liked the original game’s focus on world building, character-driven narratives, and tightly scoped pacing…I’m not so sure you’ll have a good time here.
I’m a pretty big fan of Obsidian. I’m that guy you know who loves Alpha Protocol. I think that Fallout: New Vegas is the best one in the franchise, even against the originals. Avowed is still one of my favorite games I’ve played this year. I’ve completed the original Outer Worlds more than once, even suffering through the entirety of its questionable Nintendo Switch port. Obsidian’s legacy of RPGs is among the best in the business, and with recent production issues at other big studios in the space like Bioware and Bethesda, they might be the most reliable thing going right now for those that like some stats and choices in their game stories.
