Pale Flare is a self-taught photographer and visual artist based in Bangkok. Pale Flare uniquely creates works using photography and AI-generated images, expressing themes of impermanence, vulnerability, and beauty in life’s often-overlooked details.

-まず、写真を始めたきっかけを教えていただけますか？

 

 

 

2011年、大洪水に見舞われ、家族と共にしばらくの間、引っ越しを余儀なくされました。その時期、兄のカメラCanon EOS 7Dと写真の本を見つけたんです。他にすることがあまりなかったので、その本を読みカメラの使い方を学び始めました。そして、カメラを使い続け、時が経つにつれて、カメラは私にとって言葉では表現しにくいアイデアを表現するツールとなりました。

 

 

 

 

 

-Firstly, will you tell us how you started photography?

 

 

 

In 2011, a major flood forced my family and me to relocate for a while. During that time, I found my brother’s Canon EOS 7D and a photography book. With little else to do, I started reading the book and learning how to use the camera. -今回このオンライン展覧会でご紹介してくださっている作品について教えてください。

 

 

 

私の作品は、現実と空想の境界を曖昧にするようなイメージを通して、人間性を考察しています。個人的な体験、日常的な観察、共有された物語を元に、写真とAI生成画像を用いて、無情さや脆さ、そして生きることの静かな複雑さをテーマとして表現しています。

 

世界をあるがままに描写するのではなく、言葉にしにくい感情や心理的状態を映し出すことを目指しています。また、曖昧さや抽象性を受け入れることで、鑑賞者が自由に解釈できるような作品制作を心がけています。

 

 

 

 

 

-Please tell us about your the works you are presenting to us in this online exhibition.

 

 

 

My work examines the human condition through images that blur the line between reality and imagination. Drawing from personal encounters, everyday observations, and shared stories, I use photography and AI-generated imagery to explore themes of impermanence, vulnerability, and the quiet complexities of existence.

 

Rather than depicting the world as it is, I aim to reflect emotional and psychological states that often go unspoken. -AIを使用して作品制作をされているとのことですが、非常にユニークで実験的な試みですね。あなたにとって、AI生成画像を作品制作に取り入れることの面白さとまた逆に難しさはとは何でしょうか？

 

 

 

私にとって最も興味深いのは、非常にリアルな画像を作成できる点です。現実世界では不可能なこと、あるいは非現実的な可能性を切り開いてくれるのです。最も難しいのは、作品がプログラムのデフォルト設定によって形成されるありきたりな画像とならないよう、真に本質的な声と意図を維持することです。技術的なコントロールと予測不可能な要素を受け入れることの間で、常にバランスを保つ必要があります。

 

 

 

 

 

-You are creating images by utilizing AI, which seems to be very unique and experimental approach. What do you find most interesting and what do you find most challenging when working with AI-generated images?

 

 

 

For me, the most interesting aspect is its ability to create highly realistic images. It opens up possibilities that would be impossible or impractical to photograph in real life. The most challenging part is ensuring the work retains an authentic voice and intention, rather than becoming just another image shaped by the program’s defaults. -あなたの作品にはストーリー性があるように見受けられますが、何か特に鑑賞者に伝えたい物語やメッセージなどが背景にあるのでしょうか？

 

 

 

私は物語からインスピレーションを得ることが多いので、作品には自然と物語性が生まれます。しかし、決まったストーリーやメッセージを伝えるのではなく、鑑賞者がそれぞれの記憶や経験を通して、それぞれの解釈で作品と繋がれるような作品を制作したいと思っています。

 

 

 

 

 

-Your works seem to have a strong narrative…Is there a particular story or message you’re trying to convey behind?

 

 

 

My work is often inspired by stories, so a sense of narrative naturally emerges. -作品のコンセプトや構図が大変ユニークで印象的ですが、こういったアイデアはどのように思いつくのでしょう？

 

 

 

アイデアやコンセプトは、私の個人的な経験から生まれています。具体的な出会い、人々から聞いた話、日々の観察、そして夢などからインスピレーションを得ています。私は通常、型どおりの表現を目指すのではなく、特定の感情や雰囲気を呼び起こすことを目指しています。

 

 

 

 

 

-The concept and composition of each work is very unusual and impressive, how do you usually come up to these ideas?

 

 

 

The ideas and concepts come from my personal experience, inspired by specific encounters, stories people have shared with me, everyday observations, and often my dreams. I don’t usually aim for literal representation, but rather work toward evoking certain feelings or atmosphere. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

-使用しているカメラ機材に何かこだわりはありますか？

 

 

 

私はデジタルとフィルムの両方を使っていますが、変わらないのは、小型のコンパクトカメラ、特にジャケットのポケットに入れて毎日持ち歩ける大きさのカメラを好むことです。

 

 

 

 

 

-Do you have any particular preference regarding cameras (equipment) you use?

私の作品にインスピレーションを与えてくれた素晴らしい写真家は、川内倫子さん、志賀理江子さん、レン・ハン（中国の写真家）さんなどたくさんいます。

 

 

 

 

 

-Is there any artist or photographer that has inspired your works?

 

 

 

There are many great photographers who have inspired my work, such as Rinko Kawauchi, Lieko Shiga, and Ren Hang.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

-日本に興味はありますか？好きな日本人アーティストはいますか？

 

 

 

日本の芸術や文化によく見られる繊細さと節度にインスピレーションを受けています。天野喜孝（画家/イラストレーター）、山本タカト（画家）、沙村広明（漫画家/イラストレーター）、伊藤潤二（漫画家）、黒沢清（映画監督/脚本家）、河瀬直美（映画監督）など、様々な視覚媒体を通して尊敬する日本のアーティストは数多くいます。

 

 

 

 

 

-Are you interested in Japan?　Any Japanese Artist you like?

 

 

 

I’m inspired by the subtlety and restraint often found in Japanese art and culture. There are many Japanese artists I admire across different visual mediums like Yoshitaka Amano, Takato Yamamoto, Hiroaki Samura, Junji Ito, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, and Naomi Kawase.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

　　　

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

　　　

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

-将来的に何かやりたいことや、今すでに考えていることがあれば教えてください。

 

 

 

最近、私のインスタグラムのフォロワーが日本から大幅に増え、今ではフォロワーの大半を占めるまでになりました。いつか日本でも作品展を開催したいと思っています。

今年末には初の写真集を出版する予定で、とても楽しみにしています。また、将来的にはより具体的で焦点を絞ったテーマで別の写真集も出版する予定です。

最後に、他のアーティストとのコラボレーションの可能性も模索しています。異なる視点が新しい作品をどう形作るのかということに興味があるからです。

 

 

 

 

 

– Please tell us if you have something you want to do in the future or any project you already have in mind.

 

 

 

Recently, I’ve noticed a significant increase in followers from Japan on my Instagram, to the point where they now make up the majority of my audience. I hope to one day have the opportunity to present my work there in a physical exhibition.

I will be releasing my first photobook at the end of this year, which I’m very excited about, but I also plan to publish another in the future with a more specific and focused theme.
