日本刀片手持ち両手持ち論争が始まると毎回思い出すけど、初期のUO(ウルティマ・オンライン)ではkatanaは最速の片手剣で威力は低めだった。(両手持ちのNodachiが実装されたのは7年後の拡張パック) で、何故katanaがスピード特化の片手武器だったかというと、これには理由がある。

以上は20年くらい前にAsukaサーバーのブリテイン北の鍛冶屋で出会った鍛冶師から聞いた話だ。愛用の斧の修理を頼んだ際に話が弾み、作業後に自宅に招待してくれた。元開発スタッフだったという彼は、他にも色々な話を聞かせてくれた。

UOの開発年を考えると、助さんが里見浩太朗からあおい輝彦に変わってるかどうか微妙な時期だが、実家の母は時代劇全然詳しくなくて、息子に頼まれて適当に録画しただけらしいので、昼頃にやってた再放送(里見浩太朗)説が濃厚である。

昔、自分で書いたテキストを見つけたので欠落していた部分を補足する。 彼はロード・ブリティッシュことリチャード・ギャリオット氏の学友でありオリジン・システムズ初期メンバーの一人だったとの事。プレイヤーとしてAsuka最大のプレイヤータウンLagTownの創設にも関わったらしい。

2005年の日記を読み返すと、「今から丁度4年前」と書いてあったので、この邂逅は2001年の出来事だったらしい。 彼とは朝まで語り合った後に別れた。その時招待された家はLagTownの中のどこかという事しか覚えておらず、ブリ北の鍛冶屋で見かける事もなかったので、彼との再会は叶わなかった。
