Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: network-manager Version: 0.9.8.0-5 Severity: wishlist Dear Network Manager maintainers, I've recently asked our DSA team to create a new network-test.debian.org service (See [rt.debian.org #4756) to be able to script tests of network connectivity with a stable service. Originally I intended this service to improve the 'network-test' script in the ifupdown-extra package, however, in light of the new Network-Manager capability to check connectivity status, I think it can be useful for network-manager users too. The service is now running and it is a static Virtual Host distributed along several Debian-managed machines with IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity. Specifically for Network-Manager, based on NetworkManager.conf(5), I've setup a URL for network connectivity tests which is now alive and running as you can see here: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- $ echo -e "GET /nm HTTP/1.1\r\nHost: network-test.debian.org\r\nConnection: close\r\n\r\n" | nc network-test.debian.org 80 HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Sun, 17 Nov 2013 10:52:46 GMT Server: Apache Last-Modified: Sat, 16 Nov 2013 16:28:43 GMT ETag: "1019d211-19-4eb4dcee584c0" Accept-Ranges: bytes Content-Length: 25 X-NetworkManager-Status: online Connection: close Content-Type: text/plain NetworkManager is online -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I would appreciate if you would consider: a) testing this service and see if it suits Network-Manager's requirements b) changin Network-Manager in order to add the following when creating a new managed connection: ------------------------------------------ [connectivity] uri=http://network-test.debian.org/nm ------------------------------------------ That way, when our Debian users setup a network connection they can test that it has full end-to-end connectivity and will be able to detect the following situations: - systems connected to cable connections which receive an DHCP assignment but are not fully connected to the Internet - as is the case with corporate connections which have network firewalls in place which require the use of network proxies for Internet access - systems connected to hotspots using WiFi which can connect and get a DHCP assignment but are forced to go through a captive portal before Internet access is granted (common use case for public/hotel WiFi hotspots) Please let me know if you need help in implementing the above changes. I'm not familiar enough with Network-Managers' codebase to produce a patch, but could try to work on it if assistance is needed. I'm a bit worried to enable such a feature by default though since this is some kind of privacy breach. This should be enabled explicitly by the administrator. I'm considering adding a short section to README.Debian about connectivity checking and/or add it to NetworkManager.conf but commented out. Would that suffice for you? Michael

[ I'm sorry if this mail turns out just a little bit too long :) ] On 1 April 2014 14:12, Michael Biebl <biebl@debian.org> wrote: > Thanks a lot for getting this service setup. > I'm a bit worried to enable such a feature by default though since this > is some kind of privacy breach. This should be enabled explicitly by the > administrator. > I understand your concerns. Although I don't see where privacy is breached since no personal information is leaked by the use of this service. That is, unless you consider (and some data protection directives, such as the Spanish do) that the IP address is "personal information" that can only be registered after the user's consent. Currently this service logs requests, just like any other HTTP service in Debian used (sometimes) automatically, such as the Debian mirror network. But the only information logged there is the IP address. If there are privacy concerns regarding this information we could just remove the logs from the service and, even, put forward a privacy statement in the website. Please note, however, that, currently, the default configuration of browsers in Debian makes them already connect to Debian-provided services (i.e. default page is http://www.debian.org/, not a blank page). Those connections are actually providing the same information than the network-manager applet would. I'm considering adding a short section to README.Debian about > connectivity checking and/or add it to NetworkManager.conf but commented > out. > > Would that suffice for you? > I would actually prefer if this was a debconf-configurable option. Similar as how we currently handle other online-connecting services like popcon (IIRC popcon is currently installed in the default installation, that's why I'm comparing with it). Unlike popcon, however, I suggest we currently define it with a medium priority with the default being no'. That way: a) depending on their debconf-prompt level, users will actually see this option on system installation. However, by default, on installation, users will *not* see the prompt and will not enable the network-test service a) administrators or knowledgeable users that want to enable it do not have to read a document, they can just reconfigure the package (or define the option when doing a mass-installation using d-i seed files). If this option is just left as some information in the README.Debian file, I'm afraid that the service will never be really used. I certainly believe is a nice feature for users (specially mobile Desktop users using all type of network connections), which is actually nowadays enabled by default in many other Operating Systems (from mobile devices to desktop systems). I have see no privacy outrage associated with these services myself, but maybe it's just because people are not aware of this happening. Regards Javier

I've added this to /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/ or /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf rebooted and no visible change. What is required for captive portal detection? Running i3 and nm-applet. Would be nice to have an explanation of what this does... AFTER the url is probed.

Changes:
network-manager (1.8.0-3) experimental; urgency=medium
.
[ Rico Tzschichholz ]
* Enable vala bindings support
.
[ Michael Biebl ]
* Enable connectivity checking functionality.
Provide a new package called network-manager-config-connectivity-debian
which can be installed to enable NetworkManager's connectivity checking
functionality. This is particularly useful for captive portal detection.
(Closes: #729783, #859934)
* Reload NetworkManager after installing
network-manager-config-connectivity-debian
* Drop obsolete migration code
* Stop reloading dbus after installing network-manager.
Nowadays this is done automatically by dbus via dpkg file triggers.
