I was not expecting to see TENGAI on Steam, but just look what the wind put in my way... This game is one of the most charismatic game from Psikyo, a horizontal scroll shoot 'em up with waifus, ninjas, robots and all sort of weird things... I love this game and i can see in my mind my old times playing on the real arcade machine. This one and Strikers 1945-III are my personal favorites from Psikyo.

Solid STG... I just love everything about this game.

Tengai is an excellent horizontal shmup with a very intense pace, a smooth progressive difficulty curve, great visuals and a blood-pumping soundtrack. This port succeeds at bringing the game to computers with what seems to me flawless emulation with no input lag issues at all.

As other reviews have pointed out, it might be disappointing that the material added by the Saturn port is missing (extra animations, voice overs, bonus illustrations, guest character). I understand it could be argued that this release is transparent in its intention of translating the arcade original so ignoring the Saturn extra content is a reasonable choice, but still it means this cannot be considered a definitive way of playing Tengai —both the arcade and a Saturn mode should have been offered as an option from the main menu to do justice to the loving work that was poured into the home-console afterlife of this remarkable game.

However, the reason why this port undisputedly deserves a thumbs-down is that it fails at presenting the most essential features that should be expected from any shmup re-release this century: it doesn't have a practice mode (which already existed in the PS2 port!) and it doesn't even have save-states. Again: the game features NO PRACTICE MODE and NO SAVE-STATES.

Should they correct this preposterous situation and patch in basic features Tengai had almost 20 years ago in its PS2 incarnation, this review would turn into an enthusiastic thumbs up as the game itself is pure bliss. But as things are now, four years after release, this deserves nothing but scorn.

I like the game. It's a fun psikyo shooter. There's nothing special about the game that makes it stand out.

I'm really happy that unlike some of the other psikyo shooters it doesn't have restarts when you run out of lives like some of their other shooters where you have to clear sections on a single credit or be infinitely playing the same section until you get through it or rage quit.

It's graphics, sound, etc are ok for the time the game was released.

Some of the endings are funny. It's fun trying the different characters.

This is the arcade version not the console version which some gamers wanted.

I'm an arcade junkie. I'm happy with it as is.

Another great Arcade to Steam conversion by City Connection.

Menus, performance, sound, responsiveness etc are top notch.

No need to own arcade machines when conversions this good are available.

Thoroughly recommended.

The good:
Balanced better than other versions of the game thanks to the extra options. They took out the annoying feature that starts the level over when you run out of lives. Defintly challenging either way

The Bad: Idk what version or port this is supposed to be but it seems to look a little worse than the original arcade version that has cleaner animations and sprites and better backgrounds overall. I've read that features are missing from the saturn version as well.

Overall: still nice to see this on PC/steam. I hope the dev does a better job with ports in the future tho

Awesome awesome awesome !!!!

Sengoku Blade/Tengai/Samurai Aces: Tengai or whatever the heck you want to call it is a pretty fun arcade smup from Psikyo, a company known for its influential bullet hell games from back in the day like Gunbird 2 or the first Samurai Aces game.

Ofc this game has seen many ports this being the third one (I think) which might make you wonder if it's even worth buying but tbh this is the most accessible the game has ever been:
-You can set the difficulty
-Decide how many continues you want
-It has the secret character
-and on top of that it's in English

The only other port that comes close is the Saturn version since it also has the difficulty select option and on top of that it has animated portraits, voice acting and a crossover character: Marion from Gunbird. But..... it's Japanese only.
Which I mean sure if you just want to play the game it has the edge over the steam one but the game has pretty hilarious dialogue writing. From classic quotes like "Tengai does it again!" to "Socrates wants more cigarettes" and just in general some endings can either be pretty sweet or pretty cool like Katana's good ending or Koyori's good ending or Tengai and Ayin's co-op ending.

But then again Ig you have youtube for that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Either way if you are interested you could def get it for super cheap on a sale like I did
or just try it out first on fightcade 2 or on another emulator to see how you like it and then make your choice

But I def think this is the best way to experience the game
and I had a lot of fun :)
(I swear I'll 1cc it eventually)

I find Psikyo shooters pretty hit or miss with me, and Tengai is one of the misses. This game hits many of the things I don't care for in Psikyo games while also adding a few new elements I also find not very fun.

Tengai is a horizontal shoot 'em up where the player picks a character that flies around shooting enemies with their own brand of shot, charged shot and limited bomb attack. With in stage pick-ups to power up the regular shot from a homing attack with a trailing spear option-style attack. With the more powerful regular shot balanced with more focused area of effect bomb attacks and such. I've never been much of a fan of the Psikyo charge attack, since the screen is usually full of enemies and/or projectiles, and the charge attack can often pull away from screen control or loss of focus. Plus, I can never quite tell how much the game wants me to use the charge attack to be successful.

The thing I like the least with Tengai is the near bullethell attacks that often move at the faster end of more traditional shump projectiles. All the while the player character is pretty slow. Like bullethell focused attack slow. Adding to this is a not easily defined hit box since the player characters a person and a fairly large sprite for a STG. Making the game fairly frustrating to dodge.

Tengai is also one of the Psikyo shmups where I can barely tell the difference between the easiest difficulty and the hardest. Sure, there's a difference but it isn't much. And I've played enough of their Strikers 1945 series to know their games can have a wide margin of easy to hard.

The graphics, music and sound are excellent in Tengai. They're my favorite aspect of the game. I especially like some of the music tracks. But I'm constantly underwhelmed with the actual game to want to play it for very long. Let alone improve and practice playing it.

Tengai is also one of the trickier Psikyo games here on Steam to get a not standard controller (Xbox or PS) setup. I like to either use a Sega Genesis USB or an actual arcade stick. Neither are particularly easy to figure out what the game maps these buttons as. Fortunately, there are few button inputs for this game. So it is easy enough to figure out Shot and Auto Shot and make the rest Bomb.

I'd have to think about it more, but I could see me ranking Tengai as my least favorite Psikyo game here on Steam. It's competing with Strikers 1945 III and Sol Divide of the top of my head. I'm sure all those games have their fans, but I'm certainly not one of them.
