Did we even watch the same show?
Some months back I got into this as my first anime (I had only watched Pokemon before and had a good understanding of Japanese video games.). I had seen so much fans of this show and their memes about "Rei vs Asuka best girl" and that it's so deep.
I watched most of it (the last thing I remember was Shinji's EVA growing a human arm) and like… this show is nothing like how people hype it as.
Rei vs Asuka is the best example of this. The Love triangle was not as focused on as online discourse makes it out to be. It didn't feel like a main focus for the show and at most was to establish how Shinji sees himself with the people he's around.
>>106112 is much of the criticisms I have of the show.
Even the pseudoreligous imagery isn't anything special. I knew before watching the show that the writers only chose it because it looked cool, but thats not even something I've seen exclusive to the show. It's not even exclusive to anime in fact. Grant Morrison Doom Patrol has all of that (religious imagery that means nothing but trying to feel more deep and a bunch of other stuff that make people latch on to Evengelion) and probably would've attracted the same fans (or at least the recent NGE fans) but most of them think that all American comics are Spider Man and Invincible slop and whatever Batman reboot just came out and have zero knowledge on stuff like the early modern age of comics (Early Grant Morrison fits all the things these people like).
Sorry if this felt like rambling but im genuinely confused on how this was the same show that you see everyone talking about.
