Best N64 romHack?

N64 Rom Hack/Homebrew
r/n64 - SUPER MARK STAR ROAD THE LEGEND OF BAND KAZSOE THE NGGIES OF PLATE TIME エフゼロクライマックス 08 F-ZEROX CLIMAX MARIO KART AMPED UP A BRAND NEW ADVENTURE THROUGH THE LAND OF HYRULE!! כן

Stumbled across these recently and I’m quite impressed. Played the he’ll out of mk64 amped up, fzero climax is pretty hard and starboard is a great way to play more Mario 64. Still yet to play jiggies of time.

Favourite is probably MK amped up.

It will be Return to Yoshi's Island when it releases

100% this. Kaze is putting so much effort into it.

The restored Dinosaur Planet is also really cool given the fact we didn't have the game for over 20 years and it was almost forgotten to time.

When dinosaur planet will be 100% complete it could well be the very best hack yet

I'm honestly just waiting for him to recreate Mario 64 with his new engine after it..

Banjo Kazooie and the Jiggies of Time is what dreams are made of.

The Bear Waker is great, too.

What do I need for this

Smash Remix, current version is 1.52 or so. 10/10

I have never been able to get this to work on an everdrive cart on my original console.

You need an expansion pak.

Jiggies of Time is incredible.

Smash Remix is definitely the best. Adds a ton. Takes nothing away. It could actually replace the original game.

But my next pick is Banjo Kazooie Jiggies of Time. Love letter to fans of Banjo, Zelda, and the N64 as a whole. Despite the Zelda skin, it almost feels like it could be a proper Banjo game. Even the writing is on point. It's also one of the only rom hacks i've ever managed to play from start to finish more than once. Kurkomods are just that high quality.

Ocarina of Time: The Missing Link

Made me nearly cry to play a new N64 Zelda.

Mario 64: Decades later is fantastic

I had to stop playing because my laptop can barely run the (authentic) n64 emulator, which makes me miss jumps, but its very fun.

Difficulty is for people who've played the original dozens of times, its far from kaizo but does require meta that the base game rarely/doesnt use.

I got halfway thru before shelving it untill I dont have a laptop from temu 😭 excellent full scale romhack tho with ~150 custom stars

My favorite console compatible ones in no particular order:

Smash Remix

Oot Ultimate Trial

Mario 64 co-op

DK64 Tag Anywhere

OotMM Randomizer

Oot Project Indigo

[deleted]

Waluigi's Taco Stand

I’m always looking for more fzero

Jiggies of Time has to be there. Also Smash Remix as others have mentioned. My three other submissions would be Paper Mario Black Pit, Paper Mario DarkStar, and Zelda - the Ultimate Trial

Paper Mario Master Quest (jr) is an all time great rom hack

I love Amped up because when I have friends over that is the game because of the locked 60 fps performance on the vanilla tracks

Where do you get these

ROMhacking.net should have them (I know the banjo Kazooie one is there), and they also have an online patcher

Don't forget the OoT Hacks! Ultimate Trial, Sealed Palace, Missing Link and Sand of Time are all worth a shot.

  • Smash Remix

  • Goldeneye Beta Restoration

  • Mario with a Shotgun

  • San Adreas Kart

  • Waluigi Taco Stand

The legend of Peach

It's a cancelled mashup of Oot and SM64 where you play as link in the world of SM64 remade with Oot more realistic graphics

It's so sad it will never get finished, the hub and the one level we have looks fantastic and plays great

Goldeneye X

Never played Jiggies of time. It’s good?

I stumbled upon it randomly and was pretty blown away by how much of a faithful BK game it feels like. If you enjoyed the originals as a kid, boot that shit up!

My only complaint is that the note door prices are brutal, haha. Make sure you get at least 90/100 notes before you exit a level.

But yeah, it's really entertaining to run through some of the levels. Like, Hyrule Castle/Town is a single level (combined), Kakariko + Graveyard are a level, Death Mountain + Dodongo, etc. Lot of effort put into the dialogue and overall vibe that matches the tongue-in-cheek 4th wall breaking humor of the original BK

I know nothing about ROM hacks. Is it as simple as finding the file, and adding it to my ROMs collection and it will load up in my normal emulators? Or is there more to it?

A tiny more to it. You download the hack, and then you have to apply it to the rom yourself. Make a copy of the rom before patching if you want to keep the vanilla version. A lot of hacks also come with a tool for patching too. If it doesn't, the README might suggest one to get or you can just search Google or reddit for N64 rom patchers

After the patch its just done, you add it to your ROMs collection and just load it up like you would for any other ROM. Its a pretty simple proccess and there's probably youtube tutorials out there too
