Xbox Series X to cost around $500 to manufacture, analyst estimates - GameRevolution
Which could decrease for large OEM customers like Microsoft, but could also increase due to extra costs in initial planning, ramp-up, and extra costs due to covid.
Game consoles are sold at very thin profit or even at a loss, hoping to lure as many customers in then make money from game sales or subscription. Later costs may go down due to console redesign and chip cost reduction/process shrinks.
Probably more than the RRP.
Consoles makers sell the machines at a loss (well except Nintendo) the money console makers are after isn’t from the machines, it through sales and licencing of games, DLC and subscriptions.
I got some bad news for you bud…And this bad news not only affects you, me, and every other gamer moving forward.
I’ve been gaming for years, and I’ve seen crazy shifts in the gaming climate, but I’ve never seen a shift like the one we’re entering now, and it’s going to get worse from here on in.
I’m not sure where in the world you live, but if you live in the USA, you need to not complain, whatsoever.
EVERWHERE else in the world, we’re all tariffed to shit right now, and at least for us over here in Canada, our dollar is in the mid-65 range compared to the US dollar. Meaning what costs you $599

EVERWHERE else in the world, we’re all tariffed to shit right now, and at least for us over here in Canada, our dollar is in the mid-65 range compared to the US dollar. Meaning what costs you $599 American for an Xbox Series X, costs us like $$800 Canadian, and that’s not including taxes. Other places around the world like Australia have it even worse.
Anyway, all this being said, you better get a better job, start saving your money, or get your parents to start saving money, or get a better job, because your little fun harmless hobby is about to get a whole lot more expensive moving forward.
Corporate greed, and gaming consoles being marked so low for so long is about to get a massive shift, and we’re all about to feel some massive pain.
Be prepared for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo to market their machines like that of IPhones, and it’s no mistake that it’s moving in that direction. For years IPhones have been increasing in prices, and there’s now tiers of different phones, for different prices.
Expect gaming consoles to shoot past the $1000 dollar mark in the near future. Never in my life did I ever think a gaming console would match the same cost of a PC, but it’s getting very close.
A part of me can understand the console price increase, seeing as they last for about 7–8 years before a next gen refresh, but the video game price increase is fucking mind boggling to me. Over here in Canada, again, games for the PS5 run at $89.99, after taxes that’s $103 bucks, for one game dude..
Now they’re talking about games going to $80-$90 American, that’s going to be $120-$130 bucks a game over here. The worst part is due to physical game discs phasing out, we can’t even by games used anymore, and it when we’re done with a digital game, we can’t ever sell it like we could a physical game. And now they’re talking about us getting used to not owning our games anymore…Bro…Imagine for one second, down the road, you buy a brand new car, your first car, I don’t know, a Honda civic 2026..And a few years down the road, Honda says in an interview online, that you don’t own your car anymore, and you were only paying for license to drive that car, and seeing as everything is digital, online, and connected online, they take away your ability to even start your car. This is what one video game developer said not long ago.
Anyway, I’m not trying to get off of track, but in terms of a cheaper console, I highly doubt it. These recent price increases for the PS5/Xbox Series X, this was a market test, and not due to tariffs or rare earth elements, these systems are getting cheaper and going down in price to mass produce due to their age. The companies are doing a test towards consumers to see how far they can push, and given that sales aren’t slowing down, it’s seems like they have a little more further to push.
There’s no money to be made for video game console companies to offer a cheaper more affordable version, the best you’d get is a digital or physical console machine, and eventually physical media is on its way out.
The Xbox Series X just received a huge price increase which makes zero sense considering they’re doing shit in the console hardware race, but I’d expect the next gen Xbox to be Microsoft’s last attempt in the market, seeing as they’ve gotten last place in every console wars, except with the original Xbox, where they got second.
The next gen Xbox will go anywhere from $699-$899 American. I’d love to be wrong, but I expect Sony to follow suit also.
To me anyway, the video game companies need to be very careful here, because bumping up the prices will do a few things.
- Turn the video game industry into the have’s and have not’s. Meaning not everyone will be able to afford gaming anymore.
- Push people to PC, since you can make a decent mid-level PC gaming console that has access to steam, and torch every video game console in the market at the moment in terms of power, for about $1200-$1500 bucks.
- The return of Piracy, in full force.
I remember when I was a lot younger than I am now, and was playing the PS1 in grade 10 in high school, I couldn’t afford my gaming hobby back then, and my my family was poor. I went to Toronto one weekend in Chinatown, modded my PS1 for $50 bucks, had a chip put in, and bought about 10 games for $5 bucks a pop, and was good for about a year, rinse leather repeat, every year moving forward.
I don’t think we’ll ever see a video game crash again Like we did in 80’s, but we’re definitely going to see a bigger rise of Indie games, and we will lose one video game maker out of the big 3 moving forward. The margins are too tight now for the video game console developers.
Everyone is complaining about Nintendo raising their prices, and all I can think to myself is they’re doing this because they know what Sony and Microsoft are going to charge for their next gens, and even though their prices are a huge increase. It will still be the cheapest option in the future, you watch, I know you’re only asking about Xbox here, but all three systems are connected to eachother in this ecosystem.
To me man, Xbox has a perfect chance to destroy everyone in the next gen, and this is what they need to do…
Wait one year, after Sony releases, maybe even 2, and release a more superior console. Secondly, release a console with their own AI friend, that can customize its personality based on your play style, he’ll, just even having an Ai video game friend sounds super cool. You know how many lonely people/gamers are out there man? Give us our own Cortana like Halo. They apparently have Steam ready to be available on the next gen system, so this could be a huge game changer.
Lastly, just make it $50 bucks cheaper than Sony..With at least 10 first party exclusives..Game over…
Estimated cost to manufacture an Xbox Series X (sold at £449.99) — concise teardown-style estimate and reasoning.
Summary estimate
- Likely total manufacturing cost (bill of materials + assembly): roughly £200–£260.
- Adding development amortization, packaging, logistics and warranty brings Microsoft’s per-unit cost toward £260–£320 in the short term.
- Gross margin at retail (after retailer margins, taxes, marketing) therefore comfortably covers R&D and platform economics; Microsoft’s accounting uses amortization across many units, so realized cost per unit falls over the console generation.

Summary estimate
- Likely total manufacturing cost (bill of materials + assembly): roughly £200–£260.
- Adding development amortization, packaging, logistics and warranty brings Microsoft’s per-unit cost toward £260–£320 in the short term.
- Gross margin at retail (after retailer margins, taxes, marketing) therefore comfortably covers R&D and platform economics; Microsoft’s accounting uses amortization across many units, so realized cost per unit falls over the console generation.
How the estimate is constructed (major components)
- System-on-chip (SoC) + memory: £80–£110
- Custom AMD APU is the largest single cost: high-performance CPU+GPU die, packaging and royalties.
- GDDR6 (10–16 GB depending region SKU) is expensive per GB; memory subsystem and controller add cost. - Storage (NVMe SSD + controller): £25–£45
- Custom NVMe SSD module (often 1 TB or 512 GB variants), controller licensing and NAND cost. - Cooling, metal chassis and mechanicals: £15–£30
- Large heatsink, vapor chamber or heat pipes, fan, steel/plastic case. - Motherboard, power delivery and PCB assembly: £20–£35
- Multilayer PCB, power ICs, VRMs, passive components, connectors (HDMI 2.1, USB, network). - Optical drive (if present) or optional modules: £10–£25
- Blu-ray drive (present in standard Series X SKU) adds cost; digital-only SKU would reduce BOM. - Networking, I/O controllers and miscellaneous ICs: £10–£20
- Ethernet PHY, Wi‑Fi/BT module, audio codec, USB controllers. - Controller (if bundled) — usually counted separately: £20–£40
- If included in bundle pricing, controller BOM contributes here; often sold/bundled in various ways. - Packaging, cables, power brick (if internal, smaller cost): £5–£12
- Assembly and test (CM labor, QA): £5–£15
- Contract manufacturer margins and test equipment amortization.
Other cost buckets (not part of immediate BOM but real per-unit charges)
- R&D amortization: dependent on total units sold; early in lifecycle adds £10–£40+ per unit.
- Software/platform services, certification, licensing (e.g., HDMI, Dolby): £5–£15.
- Distribution, retailer margins, VAT/sales tax: applied downstream; retailers add margin (typically 10–20% or more), VAT in UK (20%) affects final retail.
- Marketing and launch subsidies: varies widely; can add significant per-unit effective cost if promotions/subsidies are applied.
Why the wide ranges
- Component price volatility (especially memory and NAND) changes BOM quickly.
- Economies of scale: Microsoft buys at huge volume discounts; aftermarket or small-volume estimates would be higher.
- Custom SoCs and integration reduce per-feature costs compared with off-the-shelf parts but increase up-front NRE amortization.
- SKU differences: digital-only vs disc drive, regional power supplies, included accessories.
Cross-check vs published teardowns and analyst estimates
- Independent teardowns and industry analysts historically place high-end console BOMs at 40–60% of retail price for initial production runs; for a £449.99 retail, that aligns with a £180–£270 BOM estimate. Adding assembly and short-term amortized non-BOM pushes toward the £260–£320 range.
Practical takeaway
- The unit BOM + assembly for Xbox Series X is plausibly around £200–£260; when Microsoft factors in short-term R&D amortization, warranties and logistics, the per-unit cost they “carry” early in the generation is nearer £260–£320. Over the lifetime and large volumes that amortization drops, improving profitability per unit.
The very little tidbit of Halo that was shown.
During the trailer, we see Chief running and gunning. However, instead of plasma bolts coming at him, it's human munitions. Bullets.
We also see that the Assault Rifle he's using was firing in what appeared to be a semiautomatic mode. Firing modes on a few of the weapons in Infinite would be an interesting gameplay mechanic, in my opinion.
Lastly, he's seen running towards a massive canyon, with what seems like smoke and dust kicked up everywhere. Why is that? What's going on?

There are quite a few if you look at it.

Even if you regretted it, it was 1 dollar! After that month it would be the normal price. The Game Pass has hundreds of games for about 15 bucks a month. They also just bought Bethesda, so yeah.
Hope this helped!
The Ally 1 retailed for 799, the Ally 2 will no doubt exist in that space, probably a little more, so lets say 899.
The Xbox Ally and the Xbox Ally X aren’t just ASUS products, they are Microsoft products, so the profit has to be shared. Unlike an “actual” handheld console, Microsoft isn’t going to be earning much in the way of game sales on the device (why pay “console prices” on the MS store when you can pay “Steam prices”?) which is tradiationally why console makers are able to sell hardware at a loss.

The BluRay drive could come from several manufactures like Samsung or LG will most likely be based on price.
The remaining components like the Motherboard, Power Supply and Case will be designed by Microsoft and built by a subcontractor no clue who as that not the sort of thing announced.
All then part will then be shipped to a facility run by a manufacturing subcontractor like Foxconn who will assemble the components in to a console then package it up and ship them out to wholesalers and retailers all over the world.
It's interesting to think that Microsoft may very likely never actually be in possession of the completed consoles as they will organise for them to go straight from manufacturer to retailers.
Yes. Xbox Series X has a slightly bit more beefier specs and is capable of 4K. That and it does have a optical drive.
Xbox Series S is a bit under power. Sure, it’s definitely a pretty decent console, especially if you’re on a budget, but it’s not worth it if 4K is important to you and if you wanted to watch movies on disc. This would include mega games story ideas such as alien franchises , star wars franchises , mafia franchises , GTA franchises , metal gear solid .

They will sell more Xbox consoles vs Playstation 5 = competition, good for gamers👍

Console runs beautifully too, plus the Xbox One X is built to deal with things like heat and stuff better. It’s also a great way to go back and reexperience some older 360 games and more.
Now say you’re just wanting to upgrade and you plan on buying into the Xbox Series games that might soon become exclusive to those consoles, go for it.
I’d also say that if you’re wanting to just convert your whole library to a new platform, the Series X has some issues with sticky buttons on backwards compatible racing games, but otherwise the console is perfect for starting from ground up.
A lot of people who moved over are happy with it. I mean as well, if you’re someone who’s got a ton of games, or like a ton of other users, you’ve got 16TB of External HDDs slap full of games, and wanna just jump to a stable platform where they can be played. Yes, in that case, the Series X won’t require much and it’s as easy and just plug and play and enjoy.
Definitely. The XBOX Series X even has a large improvement over the already quite powerful XBOX One X. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a smooth 4k 60, 4k 120 experience on major games. It also comes with an SSD compared to older Gen Hard drives. (Yes you could replace it with a SATA III SSD but it’d really be nowhere as fast as an M.2 SSD). Not to mention the graphical improvements, they’ve also stepped up and used GDDR6 memory. Well the Xbox Series X will likely Graphically be the most powerful system of the next generation. See bellow spec cheat. For example Xbox Series X has 18% more Tflop power than the PS5. It also targets 4K at up to 120fps.
Xbox Series S has around the same specs but has much fewer Tflops, what this means is that it will run the same games as the Xbox Series X but target a resolution between 1440p - 1080p at 120 fps instead. This console is apparently also very tiny.

I am unsure when either system plans on launching (because Xbox and PS are forever linked in this way), so I can really only speculate. Possible number: is likely closer to $600 USD this time around if rumors about specifications are true. Neither company wants to stay at that level if they can help it, or unless Microsoft can make a case that this system can’t be sold for less. An example of this might be showing that their Augmented Reality system is ready to go on the console or that this is a ten year system that can upgrade modularly like a PC (memory, storage and graphics mainly).
The Xbox One X officially costs £449 (₹40K) in the United Kingdom.
But now it is officially discontinued by microsoft and you will not find a new one anywhere. You can find a refurbished one and try to make a good deal.

Long, long ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Scott Adams.
Not the Dilbert guy, the other one.
His rule of thumb was you take the cost of a movie ticket, divide by two, and you get the price-per-hour that people think is reasonable for entertainment.
Tickets are about $14 right now, according to a quick Google. So $7 an hour to be entertained at a movie.
So a $49.99 game needs to provide at least 7 hours of entertainment for it to be a wise decision.
Well this question is hard to answer. What will the Tariffs be in 2027? If you’ve got a Crystal Ball that could tell me what the Tariffs in China are going to bein in 2027, I might be able to give you an answer.
I’d expect the base price pre-Tariffs to be $699-$799. Tack on 34% Tariff’s and that’s going to jump to $937-$1071.
Don’t expect Sony or MS to foot the bill on the Tariffs, they already sell at a loss during the early years of a console generation.
The Xbox Series S , titled Lockhart , will be a lot cheaper that the custom Xbox Series X .
The S does not sport a disc drive , and is solely a digital edition , The console is itself drastically smaller in height , and resembles a cube , while the X resembles an upward cuboid .
As the dimensions have reduced , it calls for smaller boards , and a reduction in specs . So although both the consoles features the same AMD architecture , the S version has a smaller GPU size , so lower teraflops and lower graphics quality .

well I don't know because Microsoft themselves haven't announced the price tag but sources have said that's going to be around 400-450$ which isn't far off but the reason it's so expensive is because like everything that's new it's going to be expensive!!! And in my humble opinion if you are smart with your money I would recommend to just wait until console prices drop and I know a lot of people that will say “just save your money and build a PC!!!” which I feel like that's a very self-centered and a close minded response!!! Because the people that say that are not considering your lifestyle and the type of games you like to play!!! It's all because they think it's better……… FOR THEM AND NOT FOR YOU!!!! But I hope this answers your question sorry for that long-ass paragraph of a rant!!! Happy gaming!!<3
Right now? You could probably sell one for $700-$800 USD, maybe even more in some markets. A rare case of an electronic being worth more than its retail price.
You can still play the same games, but you get the upscaling benefits and it will be a bit higher quality on Series X.
If you're thinking about upgrading from a Series S to a series X just know that for the same price you can get a pretty nice PC used. Better graphics, more games, no online subscription to play multiplayer.
Alright, so assuming you've been under a rock, there are two versions. One is a cheaper, but less powerful version.
The other one is a really powerful, but more expensive variant.
Sorry, this is actually all I really know about Scarlett. Hey, I'm too busy trying to help the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout 4, okay?!
*EDIT* OK, so they cancelled the cheaper option apparently. There's a cloud gaming console only system coming out though, that runs on X-cloud. It's like 60 bucks or something.
Since it is not even out yet, and the soonest it will be out is 6+ months or better(2020 Holiday season) We will NOT hear about what price it is until then. You guess is as good as any.And it will probably run the same prices as everyone ELSE selling the Xbox Series X, it being at the time, a brand spanking new system. Personally, I am planning on waiting till it is out for a year, so the bugs and glitches that always come with ANY new product can be worked out. And more games will be out also.
The simple version is…
Xbox Series X: for people with 4K TVs who want a top their experience.
Xbox Series S: for people with HD TVs who want don’t need all the power.
Xbox Series V: for spirits and fairy-folk, as it doesn’t seem to exist.
The Series S is “proportionally” weaker than the Series X whilst maintaining the features of the Series X, which makes sense since the S only has to worry about 1/4 the resolution.
Notes.
I’m sorry but I just don’t buy that crappy looking leak in a week where MS has the actual renders of an unannounced console, actual trailers, and press briefings that forced MS to

MS made the deliberate choice to have the S and X visibly different so parents go into the shop and say “my kid wants the new Xbox, the white one”. Having a 2nd black console that visible similar to the other black console destroys that and what exactly is the market for an “in-between 4k and HD”?
Tell me the Series V is a Switch like a hybrid, an “optimised” device for cloud streaming, a standalone headset, or a even a hybrid PC, and I could see it but a not quite 4k console just doesn’t seem to be a thing.
Whilst I can certainly see MS releasing a digital-only Series X, I really doubt they’d give it a separate name if its just the lack of drive.
The XBOX series X will cost more than 40000 rupees in India because its packed with exciting new Features and native 4K support AND its really small and portable . So its worth it.
The XBOX Series S will cost around 22000 rupees in India for those who want to save money. It is actually smaller than the Series X. And comes with a Built-in Speaker.
Hope this helps…
Three letters: AMD.
AMD has created insanely powerful, efficient, and cost effective hardware using the zen architecture. They have made a custom version of it for xbox.
That's it.
Everyone wonders about the release of new consoles and their model names…
With PlayStation you can tell which console is newest as the higher the number the newer the console; PlayStation 1–2–3–4–5… But Xbox does not make knowing easy…
At first it made sense just Xbox… then we got the Xbox 360, Xbox One, then the Xbox One S and X followed by the newest Xbox Series X and Series S…
Nobody but Microsoft CEOs know why they went for this method instead of following Sony with the 1–2–3–4–5 etc… Because it's definitely not patented as numerical ascension can't be patented. Maybe there's some sort of sym

Maybe there's some sort of symbolic meaning behind the letters X and S… like how Elon Musk was making a huge joke out of the Tesla Releases… Starting with the Model S then Model 3 then the model X… (Did you know Elon wanted the Model 3 to be the Model E…)
Anyway sorry it doesn't really answer the question but unless a Microsoft CEO or Xbox Senior Staff use Quora I doubt you will…

The Xbox Series X will be launching in later half of 2020. It will cost around $400-$450 as per speculations. For other deets refer Seefa Momin's answer to Should I get the new Xbox Series X?
