Tokyo police have arrested a Chinese national on suspicion of playing a role in attempted cheating on a TOEIC English proficiency test in Japan.
The police say Li Zhaobei, 30, is suspected of soliciting the cooperation of a Chinese graduate student for the cheating, and paying him a reward.
The student, Wang Likun, 27, allegedly gave answers to other test-takers via a mini microphone hidden under his face mask and smart glasses.
Wang, who is said to be an acquaintance of Li, was arrested and indicted earlier this year. Wang allegedly used a false name when he sat for the test.
Tokyo police say that after analyzing seized personal computers and other devices they suspect Li worked with Wang in the alleged systematic cheating scheme.
They say Li did not take the test, but phoned Wang multiple times while it was taking place.
The police have not disclosed whether Li has admitted to the allegations.
