Oxford debating society votes to oust president over Kirk remarks
The Oxford Union debating society announced Tuesday the ouster of President-elect George Abaraonye after reported comments celebrating the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Abaraonye lost the no-confidence vote, with more than two-thirds of the Oxford society, one of the oldest in Britain, voting for his resignation.
The incoming president allegedly celebrated the killing of Charlie Kirk on Instagram and WhatsApp, posting on Instagram, “Charlie Kirk got shot loool,” the BBC reported.
Abaraonye and Kirk met in May and debated toxic masculinity.
Abaraonye received hate and racial abuse after the comments against Kirk came out, which the Oxford Union condemned, but also moved forward with disciplinary proceedings, the BBC reported.
Abaraonye called for the no-confidence vote himself, thinking he would beat the two-thirds measure needed for his ouster. He is currently challenging the results, alleging those who wanted him gone had “unsupervised access” to the email that received proxy votes, according to BBC.
In a now-deleted Instagram post, Abaraonye said the no-confidence vote would show the Oxford Union was a place where people could make mistakes and learn from them, The Associated Press reported.

Another no-confidence vote was recently called against the current, outgoing Oxford Union President Moosa Harraj, which will take place Thursday. The vote was called by those who think Harraj ran a compromised voting process against Abaraonye.
