MG Catches Fire Near Toll Booth

At 22:45, 21 June, a fire was reported involving a vehicle at the new rest area near the Pong toll booth.
 

At the scene, an MG SUV, was found engulfed in flames. The fire was believed to have been caused by a collision with the drive shaft of a bus, which had broken off and struck the battery located underneath the MG vehicle.

 

The incident occurred while the MG was being loaded onto a tow truck. During the process, the vehicle caught fire. The highway tow truck personnel quickly decided to use a winch to drag the vehicle off the slide-back platform and then used a chemical fire extinguisher to contain the blaze temporarily. Firefighters in the area were subsequently notified to provide further assistance, and extinguish the fire.

Think there is possibly more than the reported details to this incident.

 

The MG was damaged by the collision from the part falling off the bus, but there initially no fire, as there was time to pull over to the side of the road and wait a tow truck.

 

It is possible that the tow truck, caused the already damaged battery to catch fire, or the actions of the tow truck did it’s own damage, impossible to know from the pictures.

 

From the video of the fire and the obvious relative ease, the fire was extinguished, there was no thermal runaway of the battery.

So the fire was not the fault of the car itself, nor runaway fire from lithium pack.  Seems everything but the pack was on fire, and kind of amazing in itself.

Yes agree this was not the fault of the car.
 

There clearly was no thermal runaway, but impossible to say what caused the fire from the available pictures and video.

There was a delay between the initial impact and the fire starting, and there had to be zero signs of any fire or the tow truck would have not been trying to load it and tow away.

 

The main point of burning was towards the front of the vehicle, this could have been from damage to the front of the battery pack or anything else under the bonnet, and the fire then spread to the passenger compartment. Inspection of the damage should indicate where the fire started, but we are never going to know.

 

The nearest fire trucks to the incident, would be from Pong Sub District, and should have reached the fire in under 10 minutes, and given the relative lack of damage to the rear of the car, extinguishment was fairly straight forward.

While I'm not a fan of EV's, running into the drive shaft of a bus is an extreme test of any car - and if the occupants walked away, that's a pass.

“An incident occurred on Highway Route 7, Section 5, where a car caught fire following an accident. Mr. Thanasorn Sonjoy, a 30-year-old highway tow truck driver, recounted the events. He received a notification about the accident and drove a tow truck to the scene for inspection. As he was preparing to tow the vehicle onto the slide tray, he noticed smoke billowing from underneath the car. He immediately released the winch to let the car roll down, preventing what could have been a larger fire.

 

Ms. Nachanok Rattanatip, the 36-year-old owner of the electric vehicle (EV), provided further details. She had left Pattaya and was heading towards Rayong. Upon reaching the accident site, she didn't notice a loose axle from a minibus in the middle of the road, leading to a collision. She called for a tow truck to tow her car to the Khao Kheow Highway Police Station.
 

However, the fire quickly engulfed her car, leaving only the charred remains.

 

Preliminary investigations by authorities involved photographing the scene for evidence. The minibus, belonging to FM Transport Company, bearing yellow license plate 34-2863 from Bangkok, was seized for further legal proceedings.

Yes agree, see lots of car fires everyday on Thai social media.

 

Only posted this because of the different, strange circumstances, hit bus part in road, delayed fire as loading on tow truck, and video of fire was available.

Been catching a few YT videos about EVs and the downsides of them. Bumping the undercarriage, ie the batteries, is an expensive concern.  Tesla's Cybertruck cannot be sold in Europe as it fails safety regulations....(admittedly more about hitting pedestrians with it's sharp angles).
