Devour. Level up. Repeat.

Awakening in an abandoned lab with no knowledge of the world, Evelyn is empowered by a system that grants her bloody magical powers in exchange for finishing missions and consuming her enemies.

She knows one truth: no matter the cost, she will advance. She’ll manipulate allies and spread demonic corruption with a smile if that’s what it takes to level up.

Her first mission is to escape the lab's other newly born creations. But once she steps foot into the world outside of the lab, she must contend with people who forbid her existence and who will work to eradicate those with her powers from the face of the planet.

The outside world may be vast and deadly, but Evelyn will be deadlier.

I will admit - I wasn't expecting anything good when I first clicked on this, given that the first major plot hook was cannibalistic baby-eating babies. I believed this would be yet another murder hobo demon fic. It is. But at least its more entertaining than I initially imagined.  It's literally 3am right now, forgive me for not doing an advanced review.

Amen.

Plot - unoriginal

Execution - better than usual

Overall - good brain-off literary junk food.

Entertaining with upwards potential

Reviewed at: Chapter 46: Last, never look back [Book 1 Epilogue]

The story is written well, there's a lot of action and progression moments. It has multiple enemy plot lines going on and complex world building, if a bit high on the 'keeping the mystery' side despite the main character having access to knowledgeable allies later in the book. Towards the end, the main character gains a bit more depth by diverging from the single-minded 'advance' behavior, I hope that will continue in book 2. I would also wish for some longer respite in between the action for relationship and character building; going from one critical situation to the next without much in between keeps the tension, but it's also tiring to read. I remember reading the starship mage series, and two of those books were just disaster after disaster without significant recovery, and to me it was almost stressful to continue. Just an opinion though.

Fast flowing like an action movie

Reviewed at: Chapter 24: Twenty-fourth, stop

The story felt like an action movie rather than a written story with how things progress. Things were happening one after the other with very small respites in between until about a chapter ago. But stylistically this does make sense as the main character (who is our lens into the story) is just like that. She's always hungering (devouring), and wanting to grow and progress. There is an innate restlessness to her. And the writing style reflects that very well.

The characters so far have been well developed with enough focus on all the major players that we come across. And the story has been similarly excellent with us slowly learning more as the main character discovers more as is the case with strong first person narrations. The grammar is simple and very fast flowing which makes it feel like an even faster read and adds to the sense of action and which is again, in line with the narration style. And finally the style is overall solid but I feel that it's a bit inconsistent in fight scenes which mostly feel very smooth but sometimes (very few) feel a bit laggy. But overall it should be noted that I still feel the style is itself one of the most enjoyable parts of this story. I am very interested in knowing how the style will evolve as our main character devours, evolves, and grows.

Very few stories live up to their summaries. Even less when they take the time to point out the gender of their protagonist. Usually, when that happens I expect some person with a gender problem pushing their issues into the story and downing whatever the opposing gender is, whether it be male or female or one of the many "new" genders people identify as these days.

Not so here. Here we find a character who is badass, not by merit of making everyone around them incompetent, like so many woke writers do these days, but I stead by merit of just being actually badass. Instead of the author TELLING you that you should love the character and that they're "so cool!" (Despite them being anything but!) Here we have a character that actually LIVES UP to the hype.

Sp glad I gave this a chance, that I was willing to look and see if it was trash instead of assuming just because so many others are. A rare gem. Stands up to older classic like The Deed of Paksenarrion, at least so far, for me. And frankly, the way it is written, I highly doubt that it will lose quality. Rather, I suspect the quality will only Co tinge to improve.

Interesting set up and progression so far, and the author's prose is eminently readable. Our demon main character has just been born, yet somehow knows things they shouldn't. It's early in the story but already there's lots of set up for plot and lore reveals later. Classic use of the "main character devours others to get stronger" trope

Overall I find this story to be a great read so far. I am really enjoying the focus on the leveling system and the main character's progression through both the system interface as well as their adjustment to society.

I love the gory writing style and heavy focus on blood throughout. It feels like a good theme to tie the story together so far.

The story telling is great, I feel like it being in first person helps me to imagine myself being right there with the main character throughout their adventures. I also like the slow pace that the author went with for the start. I felt like slowing down allowed me to get comfortable with how the character was developing and leveling up without feeling overwhelmed. And it felt like the story introduced other humans at a perfect time to keep my interest piqued.

I have yet to notice any large grammatical errors that might detract from the smooth flow of the story which is really nice. Everything makes sense and I am clearly able to understand what is happening.

I really like the character premise so far. The main character being something that believes it is human with partial human knowledge makes it really entertaining to read. It makes me actually think about how I might react to a similar situation if I were placed in EV3's shoes. But the fact that the character isn't quite human allows me to comfortably overlook anything that might be considered "too messed up" for a human main character.

Overall I think this is a great read so far and I'm looking forward to catching up with the story and seeing where it goes in the future. Thanks for the awesome chapters so far!

Infanticide for personal advancement!

Reviewed at: Chapter 20: Twentieth, evolve

Includes things such as cannibalism, eating humans for personal gain, identity theft and resisting and escaping law enforcement.

Story is fast paced so far, with good action and no HP bars, despite being litrpg (which is good, I despise HP bars, they make no damn sense).

Grammar is excellent. (Have I written 50 words yet?)

Eating babies is fun and cool as long as you're physically attractive, or eventually grow up to be.

Oh and the story is great, too.

I like the part where she says "I eat the baby"

The prose is great. I love the concept, the world is very suctive. It's quite suctional, really sucks you in. I do love suction.

Good story, good ending

Reviewed at: Chapter 146 - END

Not much to say about it overall was extremely enjoyable. I enjoyed the start where she ate babies probably the most. And was extremely worried when the lesbian power fantasy started i feared it would flop as most stories that go this route do. But it ended off really well and i think i am glad i did not drop this story.

As of right now (chapter 20) I can't say exactly that There's anything in this fic that jumps out as particularly unique, it delivers exactly what it says on the tin, but it does so excellently. I'm a sucker for good execution on a tried and true concept and so far Devourer more than lives up.
