I regularly follow Jiang's lectures, and appreciate his fresh take on forces that shape history, particularly about the rise and decline of empires. I am aware that not all interpretations presented are accurate or correct, but they are models or frameworks to help guide our thinking, and we have to arrive at our own conclusions. However, when it comes to science, there is a rigorous way to evaluate the validity of models or hypothesis before they are accepted as established theories. In this particular lecture, which focused more on scientific topics than historical ones, there are large gaps in Jiang's understanding of the scientific method and the three areas he discussed: cosmology, the origin and evolution of life, and neural science. And he left the impression that scientific theories are up for individual interpretations driven by intuition. There are rooms for alternative interpretation of objective data in science, but the wiggle room is small. And the standard is higher for these interpretations to become established theories than in other disciplines such as history. Still, I appreciate that his alternative hypotheses are suitable for high school students and offer a refreshing perspective in their liberal arts education. While simplifying concepts can mean sacrificing accuracy, as Jiang has noted, it's sometimes necessary. However, correcting some fundamental inaccuracies is important for general audiences. As it will shape peoples perception of science and scientific process. I will simply point out a few noticeable errors: 1) Jiang largely reflected the public's misconception regarding "Dark Energy." Contrary to the claim that it is widely accepted, Dark Energy remains a provisional concept within the scientific community. Researchers continue to seek more comprehensive explanations or deeper understanding of its nature. Rather than representing any form of deception, Dark Energy currently serves as a placeholder in cosmological models to account for observed phenomena, given the absence of superior alternatives. The broader framework of the big bang theory and cosmology remains highly effective in explaining empirical data, and, for practical purposes, current models provide reliable predictions. 2) Regarding evolution, Jiang essentially presented a version of teleology as alternative to Darwin's evolution which is based on a process of random mutation and natural selection. Teleology and many of its variants have been contradicted by current evidence. While some may find it appealing to consider that life and consciousness do not arise solely from random processes, research has shown that Teleology has not been supported by data. Evolutionary theory, similar to cosmology, is not yet complete and there remain unanswered questions (though these are not the ones cited by Jiang). Nevertheless, evolution remains the most comprehensive scientific theory for explaining the available objective data and enables predictions that can be tested in the laboratory. Scientists continue to refine and develop the theory. 3) Jiang's understanding of neural science is inaccurate. The field lacks a definitive theory of consciousness and historically avoided the topic due to concerns over testability. It is Psychologists who have attempted to develop theories of consciousness, though psychology is not strictly considered a science. Advances in brain imaging bring neuroscience closer to breakthroughs, but a final theory has yet to emerge, as the discipline remains in its early stages. 4) Jiang incorrectly applied quantum mechanics, which only describes the ultra-microscopic world. His student pointed this out. "Vibration" in quantum physics is a mathematical concept, distinct from how we use the term in everyday language; physicists borrow these terms just for ease of communication. The accurate descriptions are in the equations and peer-reviewed scientific papers. These minor issues are acceptable as "over-simplification for clarity" since he is presenting a powerful idea, not a science lesson. The mistake below is more serious: 5) The main mistake in Jiang's presentation concerns the Scientific Method, which actually describes how the scientific community operates rather than individual scientists. This again was called out by his student. While breakthroughs often stem from personal inspiration and individuals have biases and selfish incentives, the community adheres to rigorous cycles of hypothesis, experimentation, and falsification. For example, Einstein’s Quantum Theory of Light won the Nobel Prize for its ability to explain data, whereas String Theory has not because it remains untested despite the mathematical elegance that appeals to many scientists aesthetics. Authoritarian regimes often oppose science because it challenges unverified claims. Although Jiang suggests higher meaning and religious beliefs are important, science doesn't undermine spirituality—it seeks understanding with careful methodology, serving as a safeguard against ideology. In conclusion, scientific process and scientific community as a whole institutionalized objective evidence and rigorous testing as bases for establishing theory, precisely because individual scientists are driven by personal inspiration and carry biases. Although individual scientists may very well "cheat", the scientific enterprise as a whole largely do not. Public understanding of science may be manipulated, but the scientific community as a whole has upheld its integrity. There are many historical precedents where authoritarian regimes try to coopt the scientific community but science ultimately prevailed. And that is the message that Jiang did not get right.

I feel like he should begin these with a disclaimer reminding people that he is proposing ideas, not telling us how things are. Thats important to remember. He's entertaining ideas that we can consider as possible truths. He's not professing an ideology to be believed just because he says so. Im sure he would agree

Professor Jiang, it blows me away how many times you articulate the world exactly as I experience it and conclusions I have come to that always seem to be in conflict with the mainstream model. I have been an artist all my life and I have worked on improving my craft by exercising but I have always felt like it was something that I was receiving more so than producing by my will alone.
