This may be my favorite "simple" shmup (if you know what I mean). The bosses are all original, distinct, and fun to watch as they transform mechanically throughout each battle, and the music is both memorable and thematically appropriate. This shmup is great for beginners: It's not insanely difficult (unlike Strikers II and III), and each ship has a unique charge weapon that can be used at will, thus encouraging strategic gameplay. As a Psikyo shmup, there are numerous difficulty settings, so even your pet "monkey" can join the fun!

I've been playing this game for years, and although I still haven't beaten it, I'm not even discouraged. I can see myself slowly getting better--recently broke my personal record in both progress and score. One of these days, I'm gonna find out what that final boss looks like.

Hi. I used to skip certain classes when I was in high school, and walk a few miles to a laundromat to compete in single quarter high score battles on the arcade version of this game. I love this game. I would play it a lot more on PC if I had a vertically oriented screen. That's really how it's meant to be played; It makes it a lot more difficult otherwise.

I can has spitfire. This pleases me.

Made before DEI ruined everything.
This is probably my favourite SHMUP now, & I've played a lot of them.
mfw the last turret on the battleship turned into a flying mech! XD

Pro tips:
Set the game options to 'Arcade' rather than 'Consumer' to get the uncensored endings. (You also need to beat the game on at least difficulty 4 & not use any continues.)

Minor nitpick:
You have to hold down the button to shoot, even though there is never a reason not to be shooting. You can address this by downloading AnitMicroX & setting up a turbo toggle for the X button on your keyboard & binding it to a shoulder button on your controller.

Strikers 1945 is an excellent vertically-scrolling arcade shmup classic. The selectable aircraft all play differently, each offering unique weaponry, power-ups, bombs, formation attacks, and maneuverability. While you don't get the colorful characters and fantastical locales of some other Psikyo games, you still get tons of action, a significant challenge, and plenty of oddball bosses (some of which can only be accessed under certain conditions).

I'm lousy at these types of games, but I love them dearly for the sheer visceral thrill of laying waste to everything in my path while dodging scores of enemy bullets. Luckily, we get 7 difficulty levels so one can make it through the game without being an expert and still have a very satisfying experience (bonus points for labeling the easiest difficulty "monkey" mode).

Quick gratification, loads of fun, and much room for player improvement if you want to challenge yourself. I got this on special for pocket change and got more than my money's worth already (even compared to what I would have paid for 25 cents a credit). Highly recommended for retro shmup fans.

Psikyo SHMUPs are like comfort food, and Strikers 1945 is an absolute classic. The homemade mac n cheese of SHMUPs. It's simple yet challenging, fun and endlessly replayable, with a nice selection of planes to play as, each with slightly different stats and abilities, as well as 7 difficulty levels. It's a perfect choice for novice players looking to get their feet wet, and veterans alike. Very fun and satisfying.

Unfortunately, there are some minor bugs. Alt-tabbing, whether you're in fullscreen or windowed mode, is likely to break the game in one way or another. The menu will often become unresponsive until the game is restarted whenever I alt tab, for example. Also there are some occasional graphical bugs after dying, where your ship may appear invisible until your post-respawn invulnerability wears off.

Those minor annoyances aside though, the settings and options available in this port are very in-depth and offer a great number of ways to customize and enhance your experience with the game. I won't go into all of the settings, but bugs aside it is a very good port. I would highly recommend this (or the even more excellent Strikers 1945 II) to anyone who's interested in SHMUPs.

Oldschool shmup, not that easy even on 'monkey' difficulty.

For those of you who might be getting a virus warning or a safety popup of some kind from the settings.exe/s19345.exe files, this is because the publisher/developer did not pay for a digitally signed certificate for their executable.

In Windows, if you look at the properties of steam.exe (c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe) you'll note a "digital signature" tab. These signatures are actually quite expensive and there's a whole reputation system. It's to try and reign in malicious software.

If you look at the properties of settings.exe/s19345.exe you'll note no such signature tab. This is why you're getting the warning: the OS, virus scanners and/or security suites can't verify the exe so it's trying to protect you. From yourself. It does not mean it's more likely to be malicious in some way. Personally I would consider Steam to be the verification of a non-malicious file, but that's just me.

As for the actual game it's exactly what I was expecting: an arcade game from the '90s. It also seems like the typical PC port of an arcade game from the '90s in that there's no in-game settings menu, no menu item to exit the game and it doesn't auto-pick up a controller once the game is running. Must plug every thing in before launching. Being from the '90s might explain the lack of digital signature. There are also very limited options on resolutions. I ended up playing in 1920x1080 window, which is fine. This is probably a port of the PS1 version released (the directory structure of the game folder would support this). I kind of want to compare the two, now.

I don't think I played the original arcade game for comparison. I can say the controls are very tight and the sounds and music are exactly what I would hope for. And I think I like the mocking of players who choose an easy difficulty. Even I didn't choose the "monkey" difficulty. I'll stick to "child", thank you.
