Update on Patreon Funding Model

Let me start by saying this: we are very pleased to hear the results of the Epic Games vs Apple court ruling in May 2025, and how this allows Patreon to maintain the current per-post funding model. This is excellent news for AniDB!

Non-US Patreon Users using iOS

AniDB has many non-US Patreon users. If you are one of them, we ask that you join AniDB's creator page using the Patreon website, and not the iOS app, to ensure that you're able to continue supporting AniDB.

Doing so will ensure that your support for AniDB is uninterrupted as Patreon migrates non-US users into an Apple-compliant state this November 2025.

For those that don't remember, last December, I had shared in my post here on the impact of changes coming to the Patreon platform due to the Apple iOS payment issue, and what that means for AniDB financially. In a nutshell, to comply with Apple's App Store policy, Patreon was going to eliminate the per-post funding model that AniDB uses.

Now that Apple has lost this court case, Patreon has confirmed that the per-post funding model will stay. The only exception is that international (non-US) Patreon users cannot subscribe to a per-post creator through the iOS app. International Patreon users will need to subscribe via the Patreon website to support per-post creators like AniDB.

Fall Banner Contest

Having said all this, now that we can remain on a per-post funding model, we will be able to continue with the AniDB banner contest! Based on current funding, the next contest will likely be this fall, in October or November. Stay tuned!
