佐渡の稲作のはじまりは、約2000年前からだとされ、佐渡中央部の湿地帯を中心に行われていました。 この度、加茂湖周辺の丘陵に、古墳時代前期(4世紀)の築造とみられる前方後円墳2基があることが分かりました。 ともに全長約30m、高さ後円部約2m、前方部約1m。 他に、円墳4基も確認されました。
