I think it's the exaggerated progression and fetishization of the 2000's "weird girl," which I assume a lot of us using this site were at one point.
Ever since the 2020 "alt" trends, it seems like TikTok has had these recurring purity testing/authenticity battles over who is "actually alternative." A lot of these people see the archetypal 2000's "weird girl" who liked anime, manga, Japanese fashion, dressed weirdly to try to emulate J-fashion with their existing closets (with a heavy dash of scene and emo Hot Topic trends) and was probably kind of an autist as the truest and purest form of being weird and therefore, "alt."
This desire to be the most true and pure special weirdo extends to the gender ideology factor as well. Using customized pronouns, being a "boy" who dresses feminine, all of it kind of lets them one-up other women in this pissing contest and assert themselves as the one true alternative fashion kween.
The political stuff all comes from an idea that since goth came from punk and punk was a political movement, all subcultures that came from goth (and goth itself) are ALSO inherently political. And by political, they mean accepting of gender ideology and buzzwords leftism. That's where lolita gets tangled up in politics, because to be special and alternative and good it has to have punk ideology because it came from punk, right?
So all to say, it's these zoomers trying to capture lightning in a bottle and recreate what they see as the best and most perfect time to be weird while also asserting themselves as an authority on it by virtue of being "the weirdest." That's why we saw old school styles having a boom when zoomies were getting into lolita, in their heads it's basically the Y2K of EGL and from a "purer" time.
