melatonin + alcohol
Every source I've seen says that melatonin and alcohol should not be taken in combination, however the only answer I can find as to what the problem taking them together actually causes is that "it can put you into a very deep sleep". Normally, a couple glasses of wine are enough to make me feel sleepy anyway, however some nights I have to go to bed earlier and thus will take 2-4mg of melatonin as I usually do. I have done this with no bad side effects.(+ I'm pretty sure one time when I was very drunk I tried taking about 8mg to see what would happen, and nothing happened.)
So my question is - is this actually harmful to my health? Because I don't experience any ill effects, however I worry it is covertly harming my liver / other aspects of my health. Any input would be appreciated.
Those sources are overcautious to the point of assuming you're an 80 year old man with liver disease on the verge of death who's drinking to the point of blackout. No, you don't have to worry about it. Melatonin isn't even a depressant, it regulates your circadian rhythm. If anything, melatonin might even be helpful at mitigating damage from alcohol.
Currently if I am going to drink a lot I take 100-200 mg of melatonin first to reduce the effects of acetaldehyde and other negative effects of alcohol. This may not work for other people, however.
200mg? I've never heard of a dose that high before - out of pure curiosity, what are your experiences taking this much?
yeah i take like 5mg and it knocks me tf out, ive seen posts that the lesser mg you take, the more it effects you for some reason.
