The
ambassador to the UK, Zheng Zeguang (郑泽光), told senior Foreign Office officials that China would not resubmit its plans for a new embassy in London unless given assurances that it would be approved.
Jingye Group (敬业集团), the Chinese owner of British Steel, offered to waive the £1 billion compensation that it claims to be owed by the British government for the steelworks in Scunthorpe if the mega-embassy is given the go-ahead.
The figure comes from the debt that Jingye says its other businesses incurred shoring up the steelworks. However,
government, which took control of the site in April, believes it is worth virtually nothing. It took on the plant amid concerns that the Chinese company was running it down, putting thousands of jobs at risk.
