It is sad news that Susan’s Fish-n-Chips, on Forest Avenue in Portland, is closing.

This was one of the few places that “working people” could take their family out to eat for a reasonable price. Susan’s always had excellent quality at a fair price. It will be missed.

          The place screamed food poisoning.

I never got sick eating there but it was a nightmare to navigate the parking lot when the auto shop next door was open and the restroom didn't exactly inspire confidence. That plus seafood costs are through the roof which makes it only an occasional indulgence even at a working-class joint like Susan's. Can't say I blame her for hanging it up.

Maybe working people need to be paid better. It appears that any place that keeps their prices low enough for working people can't remain in business. They should've raised their prices and let people figure out how often they can afford to eat out, rather than just close because costs of doing business are increasing and they can't make money charging what they do. They must have been losing money for quite sometime on their two fishburgers for $2.50. Nevertheless, thirty-six years is a great track record, most places don't last anywhere near that long.
