LPT: Swedes are great
Swedes make a fantastic potato alternative. ive roasted them, made them in to chips, cooked them in curries, they really fill that hole potatoes leave in your life. They do have some carbs in them so dont go nuts but you can usually afford to get some in to your carb budget without running out of credits instantly like with potato. Much like brussel sprouts, people that dont know how to cook them well give them a bad name but they have a lot of potential if used well.
edit: Known as Rutabagas in other parts of the world.

As a Swede I'm conflicted about this message.
As a Dane I think this is going too far. I’m all for the occasional joke at your expense, as any self respecting danskjävel would be. But eating you is … well, off the table.
I’m part Swedish so I’m only partially conflicted.
come on, just a nibble
I'm dating a Swede and got very nervous at first 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Like oh no. He's my favorite, though lol.
You're eating people from Sweden?
I keep them in my basement so they are fresh.
Swedes are known for being kinda fresh.
That's what my brain went to also lmao
Um, I know meat is keto, but I do believe cannibalism is slightly excessive.
Canni-Swede-vore 😋
Don’t make me go Viking…
OP, thank you for the edit in your post, because holy holy was I laying in bed supremely confused why you were cooking Swedish people.
As a Norwegian I agree Swedes taste good. Especially slow cooked 😅
As a Canadian I apologize for the fact that I have never eaten a Swede, but I support your right to do so.
Celeriac’s great as well and has similar qualities.
Oh nice ive been meaning to give that a spin recently, its been a while, thanks
I often grate it and then eat it raw in a salad or stir fry it for a few minutes.
I tried daikon (they are dirt cheap where I live) but they have weird variances in their carb levels - from well within keto levels to ‘forget it, cooking 20g of daikon is not worth it.’
Celeriac is awesome.
I like adding them to soups. They're a bit too carby for me to use them as a side dish, like mashed rutabagas with a steak, for example.
I don't love what they do to the soup's broth, so I simmer the rutabagas separately and discard their liquid, then add them to the soup pot.
I thought you were talking about Swedish people when I read the title. In the USA we call swedes the vegetable rutabaga.
Would you like to share the name of this item/product?
I had to Google it. They’s be “rutabagas” in my part of the world (aka “Swedish Turnips”). I haven’t had them in years, and did not suspect any root vegetable would be keto friendly. Hopefully I’ll remember this thread in the morning.
Also, jicama is great if you miss the crunch of an apple.
Tack
I just discovered them myself and I’m obsessed. They taste like sweet potatoes to me, which is my favourite potato that I’ve been missing dearly while on this diet. I made some fries/chips with them recently. So good 👌
How do they compare to using radishes for substitute? I've used radishes and they turned out very good for a potato substitute as long as you eat them after being freshly cooked. Reheated in leftovers theyre disgusting.
I usually only use radishes pickled or fresh in salads, never thought to bake them. Swedes reheat great, in a slow cooked dish they behave a bit like white/purple sweet potato
I've tried radishes and swede, personally I prefer the swede, I find the texture of the cooked radish a bit weird, I think the flavour and texture of swede is nicer and a closer match to potato.
Ewwwww. There is a bitter taste to rutabagas that I can’t stand.
My MIL, who is of Finnish descent, used to make this hideous rutabagas thing with cream and cardamom. I politely took some the first way too many times she made it.
Then I figured I’d given it enough chances, and just passed the bowl on.
Skill issue, they dont taste bitter if you cook them right
Maybes pickled I can’t stand turnips
