(cache)USB stick detaches itself few seconds after inserting. What caused it and how to fix it?

ID from lsusb: "Silicon Motion, Inc. - Taiwan (formerly Feiya Technology Corp.) Flash Drive". It appears in lsusb for a brief moment but not after it detaches itself.

On Windows, I get a "USB device not recognized" error. A different computer also doesn't recognize it. There is clearly something wrong with that flash drive.

The flash drive is a hybrid (USB-A and USB-OTG) flash drive. A smartphone I tested it with doesn't recognize it either.

Does anyone have an idea what caused this and how to make the USB stick work again?

And has anyone had similar experiences or is this an isolated occurance?

The fact that you get the problem with both Linux and Windows, and on two different computers, shows that the fault lies in the usb stick and not in the usb port or software. The only remedy is to use gparted to wipe it and re-format. Of course, if gparted doesn't see it, you've really got a problem! In that case, try as root user

dd if=/dev/zero bs=1M count=10 of=/dev/...

using the correct device — you could find that, if you don't know how your system designates it by mounting a functioning usb stick and checking with mount. If gparted still can't see it, the the problem is physical and uncurable.

Flash drives die. This one appears to be dead. I don't know of a way to revive a dead one. I've had to toss several over the years.

I remember a friend working on a university paper, just removed the USB the incorrect way (it was not the first time) and the stick went dead.That could be the cause or sometimes the stick just dies.

Some brands are better than others. The cheapest one is not necessary the best.
