Went to the airport to pickup the Flotilla heroes who returned home after being kidnapped by Israel. Can’t stop thinking about these people going on little boats, trying to deliver food. Against all odds. Doing it anyway. The Portlanders who came out to embrace them. There are so many good people.
It’s wild to see the Pope, street gangs, police, protestors, regular people who would have been unnatural allies to say the least, coming together because everyone understands that ICE is the new Gestapo and we have a duty to stop them. And then you have police union president Aaron Schmautz lol

Representative Hoa Nguyen was the only legislator I lobbied who stepped off the house floor to meet with undocumented immigrants who had driven hours to support Food For All Oregonians. She took time to know them and fight for them. I’ll always remember that interaction. May she rest in peace.

Not sure if I understood correctly, but ICE, the best funded task force on the planet, needs the presence of the military because some protesters were weally weally mean to them?!? 🤔

Basically this week: Trump: National Guard! Kotek: nah Trump: ok maybe? Hegseth: NATIONAL GUARD! Trump: YES! Trump-Appointed Judge Immergut: No Trump: CALIFORNIA GUARD! Judge Immergut: NO! Everyone else: wtf is happening, the ICE facility is literally one block.
TLDR: Judge Immergut GRANTS a 2nd TRO blocking the Trump admin from sending ANY federalized troops from ANY state into Oregon/Portland. (Full hearing thread below)
Judge: That's what I'll do. Prohibit federalization or deployment of any NG troops into Oregon. For all reasons in prior opinion. Deployment of federalized military is ultra vires and contrary to law, violating Title 10, section 12406. I also find it's likely that defendants violate 10th Amendment.
HAPPENING NOW: Judge Karin Immergut hears emergency arguments as California and Oregon seek to block President Trump's deployment of federalized California National Guard troops to Portland. 🧵
NEW: Judge Immergut schedules a hearing TONIGHT, in 45 min, to hear arguments on SECOND TRO to block federalized California National Guard from deploying in Portland, Oregon. www.courtlistener.com/docket/71481...
SCHEDULING ORDER: This Court, having received Plaintiffs' Second Motion for Temporary Restraining Order and request for Expedited Hearing, ECF 59, sets a hearing by Telephonic Conference at 7:00 p.m. tonight, October 5, 2025, before Judge Karin J. Update as of 4:30pm Temporary Restraining Order against the feds has been granted. The judge did not find evidence that the military or the guard need to be brought in because the protests in Portland have been relatively calm. Aggression is coming from federal agents and right wing provocateurs
Still no decision from a federal judge on deploying troops to Portland. Meanwhile, protesters at the ICE facility are getting tear gassed by federal agents in broad daylight.
This is a blatant violation of 1st Amendment rights. Gooding v. Wilson 1972 and Lewis v. City of New Orleans 1974 established that criticizing law enforcement is protected free speech. This woman posed no threat to the agent, aside from a bruised ego. If he can’t handle that he can’t do the job.

Will literally never forgive the displacement of the food cart pods where all the high schoolers, businesspeople, rich, poor, young, and old used to congregate. Downtown died after that. For a stupid hotel that no one stays in, that promised to add affordable units and then did not.
lot of problems with that piece but here's one: if anyone tries to blame "empty downtown" on anything other than 1) the pandemic 2) ted wheeler destroying the big food cart pod so his developer friends could build a hotel no one uses they're either a moron or a developer
Unpopular take, but I thought the parachutist nailed it. One-third of a City Council is a majority, and nine months of policymaking is longer than one century, actually. Hope this helps!
Massive escalation at the ICE facility. Federal agents made multiple arrests (at least 4), threw out gas, and shot tons of pepper balls. Heard one of the people arrested screaming minutes later. Not possible to get a visual.
Not only does this story get a number of basic facts wrong, it doesn’t take time to actually explore why Portlanders elected these folks. Coming in with a pre-baked PDX story to fit a NYT narrative about NYC is harmful, especially at this moment.
You. Are. Allowed. To. Insult. The. Police. It’s a core First Amendment principle. This is utterly lawless behavior, for which there will be no (short-term) consequences. That he does it so casually, as they are walking away, in front of cameras. Rightly confident in his impunity.
“[t]he freedom of individuals verbally to oppose or challenge police action without thereby risking arrest is one of the principal characteristics by which we distinguish a free nation from a police state.”

More importantly, it was highly irresponsible of the to publish this article (which I know they’ve been working on for months) right now. It sends a message to an unaware public that the socialists in City Hall are somehow responsible for current national attacks on Portland.
Waking up to some careless parachute journalism from the NYT. Really frustrating that chooses to write that "some top filers" have left Portland due to the Preschool for All tax but neglects to mention that the number of overall filers went up by many thousands in that period.+
If you think the military should be deployed into American cities because there’s the slightest tension at a protest, congratulations! You are a fascist! Lots of people want to hold fascist ideologies without realizing what they’ve become, but we have words to describe things and that’s what u are

Daily report from Portland. I love this video from on her walk to city hall across the Burnside Bridge into downtown. Keep showing who we are Portland! 🌹
We need a bigger national spotlight on this building raid, fam. Agents dropped from helicopters onto the roof. Citizens and non-citizens alike were dragged from their homes in the night. People who weren't kidnapped during the raid had their belongings seized after the fact. This is madness.
"Jones, 27, is among the residents left at 7500 S. South Shore Drive who are trying to piece together what remains after an early morning, high-powered federal immigration raid led to the arrests of dozens of their neighbors at their South Shore apartment building."

Watching councilors Morillo, Green, and others share timely videos that reach thousands of people & I'm remembering how some pundits would dismiss social media followings/skill as unserious (esp w Morillo). Now it seems to me like councilors without this ability are really paying the price.
Trump has sent the military to occupy portland in a horrifying authoritarian escalation and thankfully willamette week knows the real priority right now is to juice one more story out of the fact that public records laws haven’t updated to reflect our electeds text each other on Microsoft teams
In an explanatory memo provided to WW, the city said the missing records were due to a porous search system and the fact that the city had never been asked to produce a Teams chat before.
i think my favorite response by haters to my veteran video is that i’m a traitor. lol i’m on the side of the american people this time!
Worth noting the FBI used its resources to find someone who pointed a laser pointer at the unidentified helicopter flying over the ICE building, found them with 4 people "suspected" of being here unlawfully, and they are now in ICE custody. Surveillance is at an all time high, act like it.
The Oregon National Guard said it has begun the process of mobilizing guard members with law enforcement experience to comply with President Donald Trump’s deployment order for 200 troops in Portland, but it could be next week before there are actual boots on the ground.
Congratulations to Portland, Oregon on being the first city invaded by the US military purely on the basis of being a little annoying
I CANNOT with this timeline anymore
As we find ourselves descending further into fascism I think it’s important that we remember: We must support 🗣️ local 🗣️ business 🗣️
At the Portland ICE facility. So far it’s just people peacefully marching around the block, for the most part completely silent.
Thank you for your leadership, Governor Pritzker. It’s important to name what Trump is doing directly and reassure our communities that we categorically reject this intimidation.
Whether it be in Broadview here in Illinois or in Portland, Oregon, the Trump Administration is intentionally creating chaos to threaten sending military troops to American cities and suburbs.
I also hope we don’t forget all the local folks who’ve spent years spreading the “portland is a hellhole” narrative to gain short-term political power and/or social media clout. They provided ammo to the Trump machine. They fed the false narrative and now the chickens are coming home to roost.
The Portland Metro Chamber, which over the past five years has constructed the narrative that Portland is a crime-infested city where you can't go anywhere to feel safe, said in a press conference that Portlanders should fight against Trump's deployment of federal agents by purchasing more things.
"My name is Michael Liu and I am the current chair of the Portland Metro Chamber and also the owner and operator of Fubonn shopping center out in Southeast Portland. I came here mostly, and I want to say thank you for everyone for showing up, but our main reasons for coming together was to strongly back the mayor's request for calm and to what all the other electives said, and let's not take the bait. When the Trump administration deployed the National Guard in DC, restaurants and small business retail fell by over 30% that's not what Portland needs right now. The chamber is made up of over 2200 members, most of them small businesses, and they're all throughout our city. Downtown has seen a big increase in the amount of foot traffic that it has seen. These are all positive signs of the recovery Portland is making right now. So basically, this is bad for business, and it will set back the progress our city has been making over the last few years. I guess on a personal appeal and everything, I think what we should do to combat this is go out and support our neighborhoods. Go out and support downtown. Go and visit all the small businesses in the neighborhood. We have a great weather this weekend, and it's a great time to go out and support local businesses. Fubonn has been supported. We're coming up on 20 years right now, and it's because of everyone in the community coming together to to be a part of it. So it's time for us to go back, love our city, love our neighbors, and just be Portland."

I mean, it’s the tail end of Negroni Week, but I wouldn’t call it “war ravaged”

At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists. I’m so thankful for Councilor Morillo. She’s a rare Oregon leader that doesn’t patronize us. The feds will instigate and terrorize. Nothing will placate them but subservience. The answer is not to hide. Let’s protect our vulnerable neighbors first, and then mock these goons… Tubas needed.
I actually don’t think we should victim blame protestors for what the feds are going to do. We’ve seen them do it to perfectly peaceful protestors. People need to be wise, use discretion, and center those most impacted, and I truly detest this rhetoric.

The plot has been plotting to unprecedented degrees lately, what planets are out of alignment??
I wrote for this week (also in print in this week’s ) on Portland’s investigation into permit violations at the local ICE facility. It’s one tool for a long process that could ultimately provide some accountability, with eviction unlikely, but in the toolbox.
While I encourage folks to engage in the TriMet survey about service cuts, I hope you will keep in mind the transit dependent people whose lives literally depend on the bus that runs just a couple times a day or connecting services TriMet supports. trimet.org/servicecuts/
It's disturbing that I got more training on cleanliness as a food service worker than these people are getting through the rushed expansion of shelter beds. This is dangerous for employees, unhoused people, and for Portland residents. Houseless advocates have sounded the alarm for months.

This timeline is so absurd that we got hot dog Mitch lore out of it oh my god lol
Nearly twenty years after his hot dog vending dreams were stifled by city policies, Councilor Mitch Green wants to lift restrictions on street vending in Portland. It's a divisive idea.
Ya know l, I thought the propaganda in unprecedented times would be a lot slicker. The Charlie Kirk funeral stuff is absolutely bananas. Like if this were a TV show I’d be annoyed it was too cliche and on the nose. But it’s real. It’s actually just like that.

The street plaza stuff today looks really interesting. There appears to be a of thought and engagement that went into it. Seems like an important morning meeting.

This article basically says “this new system works for people we don’t like so therefore it’s not working.” Sorry big business is no longer king. Are there things to improve? Absolutely. But these wack hit pieces just reveal that the playing field has been leveled and some people can’t accept that.
Nothing has cured my dysmorphia and insecurities more than when I trend on the posts of right wing trolls and people are like “I hate her and everything she stands for!!! But I do gotta say…she’s hot” 😂
Well, I am against fascism. I believe there’s a word to describe that political stance but it’s escaping me at the moment. Oh well!
Worth noting the City Councilor in the GOP activist’s post also just spent about a week in DC, advocating for *gasp* transportation funding for Oregon, alongside other local and federal leaders.

Where has all the leadership gone? If not for university presidents, law firm managing partners, and corporate chief executives standing up against bullies, who then will step up for the first amendment? The
"suspending indefinitely" of Jimmy Kimmel immediately after the Chairman of the FCC's aggressive yet hollow threatening of the Disney Company is yet another example of out-of-control intimidation. Maybe the Constitution should have said, "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, except in one's political or financial self-interest." By-the-way, for the record, this ex-CEO finds Jimmy Kimmel very talented and funny.
