does anyone actually play democracies in hoi4?

R: 110 / I: 6
I still don't get how Legions are supposed to be better than Levies. Sure, Legions don't take pops away from your jobs and your research, but they cost a lot, cannot pillage cities (and pillaging cities makes MAD dosh), aren't any bigger than Levies because they take troops from the very same region, and they're not any stronger either because Levies receive the same technology buffs. I don't fucking get it. Why not stick with Levies for the entire game? Anyways Imperator thread

R: 251 / I: 30
>Everyone complains about the game >Its actually really good The complaint about civ switching is retarded, just play one of the other Civs, if you want to play the same game over and over, just keep playing the same game over and over. Civ VII in my opinion is light years better than both V and VI for a few reasons. Civ switching is actually great way to keep you making interesting decisions and having interesting mechanics the entire game through and i like how you can sculpt your empire with your traditions picking early civs to set up late civs, and always having some sort of unique unit and ability every age, instead of having a late game unit that you have to play 200 turns and the games over before you even get to use it. I think the game still suffers from snow balling, and the best map generations i've used have been modded in, but there's more chances to get back into the game with age resets. And the modded map script is legitimately great. Either way all the criticisms of the game don't really compare to the benefits especially I like generals and how they're used and unpacking and packing units, i like the removal of some micromanaging aspects that were fine in the early game but became tedious in the late game and i think their solutions are good. I've played the game at launch and i've played it now after a few months of being out and already a lot of the initial criticisms have been covered.

Economic games: what games heavily focused on economy can you recommend? I am thinking about buying Capitalism II (or Capitalism Lab). I am really looking for anything on PC that focused on one or some of the following: money, supply chain, logistics, etc. Preferably turn based but real time is OK too

Humankind: Why didn’t you guys tell me how great this game was? When it was in development I was very interested, but when it came out everyone said it kinda sucked so I steered clear. My first game of theirs was Endless Legend and at the time it was still a little too weird for me compared to Civ. But in light of Civ7 being the real Civ killer, I decided to give Humankind a shot recently and holy shit I am having a great time. All of the features that it shares with Civ7 it does much better. I also read that they’ve started giving it pretty substantial updates again. Is the Together We Rule DLC any good? Also Humankind thread.

What are some annoying factions that make the game shit? For me its Yuri in Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge. You must attack them with the few long range weapons or they capture your units. Their stupid Gatling tanks have wide range. Their air defense is impenetrable. You cannot sell their miners, although they can be built as a building. Their commando unit can capture the strongest defenses from a distance.

/vst/ 4cc autumn build up: Hello /vst/, its been a while since this has been talked about hasn't it. Yeah, needless to say Spring went horribly, in fact I couldn't even post to tell you guys the cup was going on because the fucking site was down. Regardless, it didn't go well and as such /vst/ is playing this autumn. To sum up the last year of /vst/'s performance in the cup. Well, to put it bluntly /vst/'s currently more cooked than Sigurd was after the end of chapter 5 in FE4. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel, /vst/ has found a new manager and for the first time since Summer 2023 which if I can remind you all was the last time /vst/ made an elite final day. Finally, /vst/ has a triumvirate as a management group once again and I have full confidence in the other two co managers to steer this team in the right direction Anyways to anyone who doesn't know what the 4cc is >What is 4chan Cup? 4chan Cup is a virtual Association Football tournament, played with AI vs AI on Professional Evolution Soccer by Konami, featuring teams made up of various 4chan boards playing against each other. I will say, it suffers because some problems from Med 2 are somehow hyperinflated. Since atm there's only an early campaign you will basically lose interest by the time you reach ""High"" Medieval era and basically never reach gunpowder as you've conquered half the map when your playing an easier faction like France. Some Attilla mechanics like "razing" conquered settlements being removed just feels kinda lame, but i understand why they did it. Unifying the HRE actually sucks because you're getting ALL the territory every member state conquered and by that time they've all conquered half the map so you lose interest.

Remember Field of Glory Empires? There's going to be a "final patch" in near future that will adress the remaining issues and give the game a final layer of polish. Glad to see that it's actually happening >what is this Pretty cool grand strategy game that lets you take control of an ancient nation and lead it to glory. It has pretty detailed economy and nation building and is definitely a much better grand strategy game than anything Paracuck could come up with. The Decadence system it uses is also really clever because it solves the issue of "map painting" - if you mindlessly expand without thinking, your nation will crumble quickly BUT if you actually pay attention to your empire, develop its economy and invest in it's culture, it just might last longer than some of your rivals Also try out Fields of Glory Kingdoms, it's Crusader Kings but actually good

R: 58 / I: 2
Total War - a shitty franchise?: Always found their existence quite a bit weird and somewhat deceiving, as someone who enjoys games like Stronghold, Populous 3 and BfME. They take cool historical periods and instead of dedicating themselves truly to the spectacle of war, instead force you to look upon some stupid map. Jesus. I'm playing right now the Shogun Total War game, and I'm enjoying the following: unit sounds, authenticity and immersion, the music, primitive graphics and "difficult" controls. Unfortunately, I am not really enjoying anything else about the game. The combat in Total War games is also weird, the armies are fighting each other too slowly, you visually don't witness much dying and tragedy, you judge the situation by numbers, which is gay and retarded. Why does it never happen in these games that units can get slaughtered quickly? Archers barely do shit, ever. I mean, they obviously do something, but the audiovisual impact is so fkn poor. Why do you retards like these games? You really don't feel the war going on in these games, because you don't even feel like a leader of men, just some soulless geometric shapes going into each other and slowly chipping away. The Warhammer games on the PS1 are much better than these aesthetically trannified and castrated malformations that have gained immense popularity among zoomers. I had to butcher my friends list because my internet acquintences have betrayed their old-school ways by engaging with this genuinely repulsive garbage.

Rare /vst/ games thread #2: ITT: Strategy games that no one besides (you) have played. Recommend rarities and discuss games that you vaguely remember playing as a kid or seeing in a magazine that one time. Continued from: >>1919459 I'll start: Conflict Zone. Early 00's strategy game that I haven't seen anyone mention in my entire adult life. I remember it being unique because you public opinion was a key currency. As totally-not-NATO that involved airlifting civilians out of conflict zones, and as the bad guys it involved sending TV crews to film you blowing up enemy troops and enemy atrocities. The better your rep, the more advanced units you could bring in. Actually pretty surprised few games tried to make public opinion part of gameplay. Not a great game, but certainly a mechanically unique one. Your turn, anon!

EUV has the Victoria 3 Shadow Economy: Pack it up, boys. The hype died. Europa Universalis 5 is going to fail at the one thing it set out to do. It's not going to have a realistic economy. It features a Shadow Realm giving POPs an infinite amount of Credit. That's a crutch so the economy can work properly. Here is an example from the experience of a playtester: >food price is subject to global supply and demand, but separated into markets >if your markets have enough food to cover demand, but the global price is high, then EVERYONE will starve to death, because they can't afford food >the equivalent of this in the real world would be White people voluntarily starving themselves, because Africans can't afford food >BUT this is actually not happening, because Paradox "fixed" this oversight by letting POPs/Estates just buy goods on Shadow Banking Credit, as long as it's available >but only the government can go into debt, not POPs, so your people are basically being funded by invisible Shadow Demons, who give them infinite credit This has further implications with the nobility. Earlier playtesters reported that building the "Bailiff" building is an excellent idea, because it spreads control in places outside your capital and before you can build proper infrastructure. But the hidden feature of the Bailiff is that it provides your nobility with jobs and since the nobility have the most demands of any POP, but get an infinite credit card, they can super-charge your economy by buying up all of the goods. The scribbles on the right is from a playtester, who reported that nobility have: >60 ducats income >pay 20 ducats in tax >spend 350 ducats on goods It seems like the competency crisis is so severe Paradox is unable to hire a genius autist and enough sugary drinks to make him code an actually functioning economy. Even if they want to create a realistic economy simulation, they are not able to. They simply aren't competent enough.

R: 6
It seems that going "wide" always eclipses any sort of "tall" build and that no amount of upgrading will ever save small empires from wider ones. In oldschool RTS like C&C it's obvious because those games don't have upgrades, so all you can do is build more. That's why I'm wondering how a strategy game could make tall builds viable. Even games that do have global upgrades usually cap out at +2 or +3, like StarCraft. In Dawn of War, you can upgrade your Space Marine health and damage a little bit but never enough to make true super units. I understand why this is being done for balancing reasons and all that, but it seems there is no game that rewards a turtle player who successfully fights off rushes and then techs up. It technically works in StarCraft but not because of the teching, it's just because the rush player is too far behind after you counter him. Stronghold Crusader comes close because you can find ways to survive and defend even when your farms are being raided, but it has no teching. In the end, you won't be able to keep up with the attacker.

/gsg/ — Grand Strategy General: If you see a gibberish post, use your discernment, it may hold rare value. No, Vic 3 is not good yet. In fact it never will be. How fares your empire, /gsg/? This week in history: October 6, 105 BC – Roman forces suffer a major defeat to the Cimbri at the Battle of Arausio. October 7, 1571 – The Holy League decisively defeats the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Lepanto. October 8, 1480 – Ivan III of Moscow begins the stand on the Ugra River, ending Mongol rule over Russia. October 9, 1000 – Leif Erikson is believed to have landed in Vinland, likely in modern-day Newfoundland. October 10, 732 – Charles Martel defeats the Umayyads at the Battle of Tours, halting Islamic expansion. Strategy games set in space: So recently I have discovered Star Control II and I have greatly enjoyed it but I thought that it would be neat if it were a strategy game. And to my surprise, I've discovered that the first game was exactly that. But from what I've seen it is rather dated, and while it wouldn't be problem for me, I'm rather reluctant to pay for a game that should be abandonware by now. So, are there any good games about empire-building in space? I have heard mixed things about Stellaris. I've played Endless Space couple of years ago but did not enjoy it, it felt way too railroaded, with too much lore of which I cared little. I've played Aurora 4x and I believe I could enjoy it if I were to learn the mechanics. I have also heard of Masters of Orion and it looks promising. >inb4 Alpha Centauri I believe it is a very good game, but I'm much more interested in spaceship battles

R: 8
When do you think CA will ban overhaul mods?: >CA announces new TW game or sales of a previous one >be me, a strategy enjoyer, reject both and keep playing the old ones I have with overhaul mods that have more content, quality, new mechanics, all FREE Seeing how CA gradually has been putting more complications to the modders to modify the new games (since Rome 2), yet the modders keep making better mods despite all the official "updates" the games have (even stealing mods to turn them P2P DLCs), I wonder when CA will go full-crazy ex.

Frostpunk: It's been a year since FP2 released and I decided to give it a try again. Some stuff has been refined a bit, namely the heating system for the city has been adjusted where you can set the heat level per district, adjacency bonuses are changed to be more granular, and you can reshape districts for a cost. Beyond that and a little polishing here and there, it's mostly the same though. I wish the factions had some work done to them, such as having multiple radical factions rather than just two opposed ones. Anyone else doing another playthrough recently? What's your favorite factions/zeitgeist/ideology?

It's really not bad: It's not groundbreaking, but what it tries to do it does quite well. Meaning it's trying to imitate an outdated yet beloved game. What makes or breaks a game like this is mission design and I have to say they fucked it up here. They have units with Starcraft like abilities and the whole (not)GDI faction relies on these gimmicks, but also kinda kept the tedium of C&C mission with some additional tedium of Starcraft. You can also break mission, if you purposely don't do an objective, but rather explore the map, you can wipe the whole enemy force and the magically, the game spawns additional forces and building to destroy - fucking shit design. Other than that and the sub-par try-hard cut-scenes. I'm having fun. It's just too bad that so far it's so fucking unoriginal, it feels like a high quality rip-off, rather than its own thing.

Starcraft - Aeon Of Strife: So I remember playing AoS on Starcraft. I only vaguely remember it, one time I had a zergling, I was upgrading it way more than the standard 3 max, which was the custom of the time for rpg style maps. Left to Right, not bottom left to top right as was the later standard(possibly started with Aeon of Six Gods in wc3, but maybe not) Day 1 on warcraft 3, I remember getting on battle.net, and already playing an AoS map, left to right, there was a blademaster hero that someone had lowered the Blue and Green colors to 0, so it was bright red. I don't mean the chaos orc blademaster. I recognized the map, as a classic starcraft map at the time, it wasn't my favorite in starcraft, and I played more stuff like rise of rome, war of the ring, diplomacy, rp maps, starship troopers, and some rpgs. Not long ago the origin of Dota/LoL came up in a conversation and I referred to AoS from broodwar, and someone corrected me and said it was before broodwar, in vanilla StarCraft 1, and it kinda made sense to me. Googling it right now I see claims for 2002, but that looks wrong to me. In July 2002 I was playing AoS in warcraft, and I remember thinking "ooh someone already made AoS for warcraft", feeling like it was a classic map, and it would be weird if it was only a few months old. That was a long time ago, and I was a child, so a half a year could've seemed like a long time I guess. I have a lot more memories from other maps, so in a way it makes sense I guess. Anyone else remember the original AoS, and early maps, could it be older than 2002?

Best city builder in your opinion? >Cities: Skylines Shitties of them all in my opinion. In this one you have shit like 16 people living in a skyscraper and you can't even build realistic sized cities. The traffic simulation is supposed to be good but its nonsensical (drivers are incapable of changing lanes, the game puts pedestrian crossings through roundabouts etc.). >Cities: Skylines 2 Not even top tier computers can run this past a certain city size. >Simcity 4 You can build massive cities in it. Its a shame that the game was designed to build american style cities though (no mixed zones, no public housing, etc.). Game runs like shit too because of its old engine. >Citystate 2 This is the best one in my opinion. Economics makes sense and you have neat details like poor people building slums if you can't fill their housing demand either through making enough housing zones or building public housing units. There is also an entire legislation system that allows you to make anything between a communist hellhole and an anarcho-capitalist dystopia. I wish the game was moddable though.

Games that don't follow this trend?: Just finished an XCOM 2 ironman run on Legend difficulty, and while it took me ~30 attempts, only 3 of those even got to mag weapons. Once I got to the stronger gear and began to get promoted soldiers the difficulty basically disappeared. The early game felt almost unfairly difficult due to the frailness of my soldiers and lack of options often meaning a single bad RNG roll could lose a mission, and a couple of those starting a downward spiral that would kill the run. But by the time that I started unlocking more upgrades and strategic options it felt like I just out-leveled the difficulty curve, to the point where I beat the final mission without taking any damage with frankly minimal effort. I've noticed RTS games often can buck this trend through mechanical difficulty, but most turn based games(at least on their hardest modes) often have early games that are too difficult/rng dependent, sometimes to the point of cheese strategy being the only consistent ways to win, while the late game is just an unga-bunga steamroll. What ways can games solve this problem and are there any recommendations for games that have an interesting and fun level of challenge all the way through?

Or just ones you'd like to see included. And while we're at it you might also talk about units, buildings, wonders, great people and resources that you think should be in Civilization. >inb4 Hitler Wouldn't even be a bad addition, it's just too obvious pick. Personal I would like to see Alfonso the Battler for Spain (even if that technical might be a stretch) and Edward Longshanks for England. Simply because I like them. In terms of civs I think with how influential and cool Goths were it's a shame they never made into roster. With Theodoric as their leader of course.
