Forum: general Subject: Disruptive reviews and spam on the Archive

Before I begin my complaint, I want to take this moment to reflect on the hard work and goodwill of the admins and moderators, who spend many hours tackling bad content and instances of blatant copyright infringement that pop up on the Archive every now and then. It is good to see that somebody is keeping the great website from deteriorating, and with such morale, especially given its recent troubled history.

That said, the site personnel can only do so much. I am talking about reviews and comments that gather on the pages of the website's items. I have no trouble with reviews per se, but a handful of them can be disruptive or spam. By "disruptive", I mean the sort of reviews that have at best a trivial amount to do with the items being allegedly reviewed and at worst comments that waste space at the bottom of the items' pages and other people's time. I understand that disruption and spam are two perennial problems that have beset the Archive, probably since the beginning, and I realize that the site's arsenal of administrators and moderators might not be able to keep pace with the disruption that proliferates every now and then at random places across the library's vast ocean of data, so I will cut them some slack. Nevertheless, I am just about fed up with seeing idle commentary and especially spam.

As I type this, I can see myself returning to the forums and complaining about the very thing I have just described, citing actual examples if necessary. This would mean that I habitually report violations, and that can become tiresome. Instead, I wish that I were granted the privilege to edit and remove comments that are spam or obvious abuses of the Archive's review system. I am not sure what it would take for me to prove that I am fit for that right (probably more than what I have done since creating my account in 2015), but if my account history is an indication of anything, it is that I currently stand in reasonably good graces. After all, the Archive could use another helping hand.

Hi,
try emailing info@archive.org with your proposal, they usually answer there faster than here

I thought about what you wrote, qwert290, and emailing them sounds like a reasonable resort. I just sent them an email requesting some privileges. Hopefully, they will agree to having another volunteer who will remove bad content.
