The Lord of the Rings and the Wilhelm Scream

How the legendary sound effect became a Middle-Earth staple

The Lord of the Rings trilogy boasts the most awards ever bestowed upon a series of films, which really shouldn’t be all that surprising given the movies’ majestic cinematography, memorable performances, and masterful score and sound mixing. Peter Jackson brought the beloved series to life with all the gravitas that J.R.R. Tolkien’s work deserved.

But he also managed to preserve the levity and humor that Tolkien, I believe, would have appreciated.

Jackson’s persistent use of what the film industry has dubbed as “the Wilhelm scream”, for example, is one way that the director has winked and nudged good naturedly at the audience.
