Tropical Cyclone Matmo will enter within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong shortly. The Observatory will issue the Standby Signal, No. 1 at 7:40 p.m. tonight. According to the present forecast, Matmo will move across the central and northern parts of the South China Sea in the next couple of days, in the general direction of the vicinity of Leizhou Peninsula to the eastern part of Hainan Island, and intensify gradually. Locally, the weather will become unsettled later tomorrow (4 October) to Sunday (5 October). It will be windy and seas will be rough with swells. There will also be occasional squally showers. Depending on the distance between Matmo and the Pearl River Estuary, its intensity and the change in local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need of issuing higher tropical cyclone warning signals during the day tomorrow. Members of the public please pay close attention to the latest weather information issued by the Observatory.
