>>97720 (OP)Protip: Don't bother trying to watch any slice-of-life-like anime made after Azumanga as over 99% of them are total garbage and absolute slop (and are what people who say "tranime" think of - they don't think of prior animes, because they don't know about them; to those people, post-Azumanga moeslop is what constitutes their whole perception of what Anime is). Giving you this warning because you may make the mistake of "wanting more" and thinking there may be other animes "like Azumanga" and therefore download and watch anything that on the surface seems similar. Don't make that mistake, and you save yourself a huge amount of time that'd otherwise be wasted on watching trash. There isn't anything truly "like Azumanga" - there are only what are essentially imitations (in one way or another - whether it's borrowing the character "types" featured in Azumanga, or whether it's the school setting, humor style, story elements, or something else); animes made specifically for the purpose of trying to capitalize on Azumanga's success where they took the basic formula of Azumanga and remixed it in order to milk the idea of "a bunch of girls in a slice of life type anime" (and those moeslop animes began copying each other's sloppy production methods, further sloppifying everything). They're all either total trash or, at best, very generic and bland and completely forgettable.
The exceptionally few non-slop post-Azumanga animes that bear any kind of surface similarity to Azumanga are rather different from Azumanga. The closest to Azumanga being the 2005 Aria
https://anidb.net/anime/2659 which isn't slop or lazily made but it's also not particularly great and may feel childish and dumb to watch (its target audience is definitely more young teens as opposed to Azumanga which works for most age groups) but it's worth mentioning because at least it's unequivocally superior to all the "tranime"-tier trash (caution though: last time I saw it was in ~2009 and I recall still thinking it was well-made and above average, but maybe if I saw it now I'd think it's a bit worse than I did then). Another is the 2002 (its first episode was just 9 days after Azumanga's last one!) Haibane Renmei
https://anidb.net/anime/271 which is one of the best animes ever made and arguably better than Azumanga. It's a masterpiece, and in certain ways high art. But aside from being similar to Azumanga in the sense of it being about a bunch of girls and not having combat, it's very different and much more plot/story driven and much less slice-of-lifey than Azumanga and is much darker in tone and much more serious. You'll notice Haibane Renmei has "Tomo" and "Sakaki" as well as a Glasses Girl and there's a reason for that but it's not because those characters were borrowed as "types" from Azumanga (Haibane Renmei wasn't made with any intention of imitating Azumanga) or because they are the same individuals, but because of another reason - which I won't delve into here, partly because it's very plot-connected thus involves massive spoilers and partly because it's something not easy to explain nor understand (but it's something one can figure out on one's own by watching the anime a few times).

>>97808And the advice of not bothering with later-made stuff of course goes for anime in general regardless of type or style. Because keep in mind the Azumanga Daioh anime was made in 2002, during the time of "anime's final years" one may say, during the ending of anime's greatness, the last moments when anime was still anime in its traditional sense; only a few years later everything quickly turned to poop - production became entirely computer-based, and low-effort & insincere productions became the norm where everything was done to maximize profits at the expense of originality and well-written stories and characters. The era of lazy slop had begun. And it only got worse every year (studios competing with each other who could poop out anime as easily possible with the characters and story often designed from the ground-up with marketing in mind; marketing aimed towards what the NPC masses would most easily be attracted to; products intentionally designed to be slop for the slop-gobbling normalfaggots who care neither about the quality or content of what they consume as long as it has lots of sugar and coloring agents). It should be mentioned by the way that it was already plainly and painfully obvious by 2006/2007 that anime as a whole had taken a dramatic turn for the worse and during the years earlier, that turn, that shift, that "worseification" shift, was felt as it was happening (it wasn't something slow-and-imperceptible; it was very noticeable and happened over just a few years), and already by 2004 it was clear that all the greatest animes had already been made (or in other words that the time of anime greatness had passed) and that one shouldn't be expecting more such great ones (to be perfectly clear, in 2004 the thoughts about the situation wasn't "it's over, anime is dead" level of doom but rather it simply was clearly seen that all the great stuff that had been made earlier during the 90s and 80s had to them a special greatness and soul and sense of genuinity that didn't exist in the then-current ones - in 2004), and rather - in contrast to expecting anything great - one thenceforth was very surprised if anything new was even half-good.
About "at the expense of originality and well-written stories and characters" before anyone misunderstands that: that's not intended to say that specifically Azumanga's story and characters are super well written or that Azumanga is like some hallmark of writing quality (while there's more to Azumanga than first meets the eye, some of its characters have no depth to them at all and no character development whatsoever - of course it's like that, as the manga has the simple 4koma format that it has and the simple narrative style that it has), but rather I mean in contrast to the writing of the stories and characters of most of the good animes that came earlier - prior to the shift a lot more effort and thought was put into the writing than during and after it.
By the way OP or anyone else, I will not post in this thread again so don't ask me anything. Like what animes I recommend. What I'll tell you in that regard is you should just look around on anidb; you can do custom searches there to narrow down types of animes and years they aired or released, and so on, and sort them by ratings and other ways. Better to do that than just following specific recommendations. My general recommendation to OP is to proceed to watch entirely different types of animes that are unlike Azumanga and made either at about the same time or earlier - some of the greatest animes ever made started airing in the late 1980s (and I'm not thinking of Dragon Ball).
>>97724It's implied through dialogue and visuals and sound effects that one of the Azumanga characters may have - with the result of the victim turning into a ghost who follows his killer around. Something for Azu-newfag OP to think about.
>>97740Because you might get haunted by the victim, like in Azumanga. That could suck. Could be really spooky.

>>107811Whatever the fuck you do don't watch it with English audio as that dub turns the show into an unwatchable cringefest. One of the worst dubs in anime history. Most dubs are bad (one way or another), sure, but the Azu one is especially atrocious; it doesn't only sound bad, but manages to ruin the whole anime. I like Azumanga, but if the dubbed version was the only version that existed I would despise the show.
By the way here is the manga if you wanna try reading it:
>>103537 - it can be an interesting experience when you're new to Azu because having read the manga you understand why the anime is structured the way it is (so differently from other animes), as it's an adaption of the manga and they tried their best to stay true to that narrative structure.
▶ №107818[Quote]
Just watched the first episode. Structure reminded me of Yotsuba more than I thought it would. Looking back at the episode there was not much of an interconnected story throughout the episode, yet it felt cohesive and not like a mess of jumping from unrelated plotlines. Im curious if the show is building up something with the cat imagery, or if it's just something being put there to look cute or as a symbol for the show. Regardless im invested enough to continue.
The credits song is in my head now. The soundtrack was pretty good and I dont normally hear that stuff much unless im rewatching something.
Overall it didn't make me laugh or anything but as said before I'll watch the whole thing.
>>107812Yeah im glad I avoided that. I didn't even know it had a dub until searching the show on Youtube and despite the only other anime I watched (NGE) being the dub, something just felt like I should ignore that.
Perhaps when I finish the series I'll consider watching the dub in a so-bad-it's-good way.
With the structure of the Manga I could definitely see how the show tried (and did a pretty good job with) replicating that.

>>97808>>97809OP here I finally managed to watch it, it took forever to make time for it but I finally did. It was the most beautiful, soul touching, meaningful piece of media I have ever watched. I've been through a lot of stuff these past 4-5 months (snca).
I have been thinking about suicide quite often lately and I can say this anime hit really close to home. And yeah, the characters do look quite similar to azumanga's, probably coincidental since they have completely different personalities, except for maybe kana and tomo.
After finishing this, I am left feeling the same way I felt after finishing azumanga, but much worse. Because there is no way any anime will ever be as good and "hit right on the spot" as haibane renmei did. Oh well, at least it's rewatchable. And there are still plenty of good anime out there that I haven't watched.
Anyway I wanted to thank you for the recomendation even though you probably don't even check this site anymore, but in case you do, thanks.

> It was the most beautiful, soul touching, meaningful piece of media I have ever watchedI agree. I also struggled with some mental health fag stuff but I am doing better now. The ending made cry (yeah I am a fag I know, I know.) and it was very beautiful. I think it's one of the few pieces of media that can only really be watched once but I don't think that is a bad thing. Jesus saves btw.
