S.Coups and Mingyu's first music video as Seventeen's latest subunit is a California dream — and they're sharing a peek behind the scenes on set exclusively with PEOPLE.

The duo, who go by CxM for Coups x Mingyu, dropped the music video for "5, 4, 3, (Pretty Woman) (Feat. Lay Bankz)" on Sept. 29. It's the first single of their mini album HYPE VIBES, also out today.

"We decided to film the music video in Los Angeles, a city that blends iconic imagery with a carefree, sunlit energy that matches the song perfectly," Mingyu, 28, tells PEOPLE. The setting also perfectly suits the nostalgic Americana of its central sample: Roy Orbison's iconic 1964 "Oh, Pretty Woman."

"We’re curious to see how everyone feels after watching it," adds S.Coups, 30. "Our hope is that its feel-good energy and thrill of emotions can brighten your day and bring a little joy into everyday life."

Rather than the often flashy, coordinating fits they wear when performing with the other 11 members of Seventeen, the looks in "5, 4, 3 (Pretty Woman)" are closer to the artists' personal style, incorporating athletic and streetwear influences and plenty of denim.

"For styling, the bandana and denim felt like the perfect way to look effortless yet bold," says S.Coups of his look for a driving scene. "The look carried that balance of being free and stylish while still feeling timeless."

In another street scene, Mingyu wears a racing-inspired jacket and shades that give off "an unpolished coolness that fits the track’s rhythm and groove," he says. "I think this track and album as a whole showcases a raw, freer side of myself."

Filming music videos as Seventeen typically means crowding around monitors with all 13 members (which also includes Jeonghan, 29, Joshua, 29, Jun, 29, Hoshi, 29, Wonwoo, 29, Woozi, 28, The8, 27, DK, 28, Seungkwan, 27, Vernon, 27, and Dino, 26), checking their intricate choreography is on point, so being able to monitoring his scenes solo on set was a rare respite for S.Coups, he shares: "Watching the footage on my phone, I could see everything — the choreo, the angles, and the natural backdrop—coming together to create exactly the vibe we were aiming for."

"Seeing our creative vision unfold in real time was incredible," he adds, "especially after putting so much thought and care into creating this album."

CxM's HYPE VIBES also includes five more tracks that they previously teased in a visual sampler: "Fiesta," "Worth it", "For you," "Young again" and "Earth." And fans are already hypothesizing about whether they might get to see a live performance of any of the new songs on Seventeen's current world tour, [NEW_], which comes to the U.S. next month.

The music video's poolside scene was a chance to kick back during a hectic shoot day. "Leaning on the edge of the pool, I suddenly felt the warmth of the sun sink into my skin, calming me completely," says Mingyu, who credits their boisterous extras for creating the party-like atmosphere. "Their energy brought the song’s infectious rhythm to life."

While S.Coups and Mingyu are talented dancers, "5, 4, 3 (Pretty Woman)," and the rest of HYPE VIBES, was a chance to keep things a little looser.

Says S. Coups, "For this album, we didn’t focus too much on moving in perfect sync with each other. Instead, it was all about just infusing our own rhythms — feeling the joy, the spontaneity, and the freedom of each moment. We hope our song also inspires listeners to let loose, live in their own flow, and cherish the present."

HYPE VIBES is available to stream now.
