I always appreciated gigablast, a fine search engine. Sad to see it go.

I came to this forum to ask about it. This is sad.

    [–]Back-Alley-Cat- 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Truly awful news that. Any similar search engines?

    [–]Gemmaugr 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Sadly, not that I'm aware of. Only Brave search and Mojeek left that is non-google/bing.

    [–]Back-Alley-Cat- 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Hey, thankyou for the reply. I've also come across these two; infotiger.com and rightdao.com which I don't know a lot about, but seem promising

    [–]Gemmaugr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hadn't heard about either, so thanks!

    [–]Yakov_Kach 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'd have to go with Mojeek. They were Gigablast partners/competitor

    [–]Back-Alley-Cat- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Thankyou

there is any information about what happened or if is a technical thing? the search engines dies just like that?.

this is a great loss, RIP.

What bothers me the most is how his death went so unnoticed, I knew it wasn't very well known but I didn't expect it to be like that either until I investigate to see if there was a problem. The war against the monopoly is really lost.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (13 children)

Is there an official statement somewhere?

    Just stumbled on this post.

Wow, that is a classy post by Mojeek's owner considering Gigablast was basically his competitor. Glad that they understand how these smaller search engines are important to a more free web.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigablast

"Gigablast was an American free and open-source web search engine and directory ... During early April 2023, the website would abruptly go offline without warning, officially ending the project after 23 years.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Sad to see it go

    [–]Yakov_Kach 0 points1 point  (2 children)

    websites do that??

    [–]rooiratel 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No they magically stay online all by themselves after the owners stop maintaining and/or paying for the hostnames and servers they run on.

    [–]Yakov_Kach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Well this is shocking news.

    [–]xyz679 1 point2 points  (5 children)

There is no statement of any kind anywhere, the guy running the engine vanished off the face of the earth. Given the results it was giving for some highly censored topics I'm impressed it lasted this long. Won't be surprised if Matt Walsh "committed suicide". Perhaps someone else can continue the project given it was open source, as unhealthy as that might end up being.

    [–]Back-Alley-Cat- 1 point2 points  (3 children)

    Can Mojeek not utilise it?

    [–]mojeek_search_engine 1 point2 points  (2 children)

we've got our own code that we've built in-house, so it's not so useful to us, cool that it's out there though

    [–]Back-Alley-Cat- 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thankyou for taking the time to reply. I'm very impressed with Mojeek, it is now my browser default search. I sincerely hope you hold steadfast and resolute, as search engine diversity appears brittle at best. Thankyou for an invaluable service

    [–]mojeek_search_engine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks for taking the time to think as deeply as you have about search, most don't :D. Happy seeking!

Matt Wells(gigablad) has a blog post up while back that discussed the Cdn and ddos protection monopoly Cloudflare, which now controls over 95 percent of that market share. Apparently, Google, Microsoft, and China's Baidu supported and funded the company during its startup phase. They decide what gets to crawl what domain before being labeled a threat. So, no. There will be no more search engines.

    UPDATE:

apparently some useless idiot made this crap website gigablastsearchengine.com, naming the real gigablast in vain (I highly doubt it was Matt wells himself, who was cornered by google killing his associates and then urging him to shut down all servers (currently gigablast.com doesn't work, and google and other Big Tech search engines don't seem to index it (wink wink never liked broken links, even though the internet archive exists)) the contact information gives no indication of no action taken by Matt, and yet this fuc**r have the daring to call this sh*t a search engine, when in reality it is a Meta search engine with the same Big Tech search engines as always linked on the page).

The truth is sad, it is already confirmed that Gigablast is more than dead, buried, forever, this, in the end we are left with Mojeek, and little else as far as search is concerned, the already dead web that only works as a swarm of information harvesting, tracking, gaslighting, and bootlicking for the Big Tech monopolies. AI was the last nail in the coffin, which according to Matt himself, is nothing more than the great collector/container of the information of the last 23 years that packaged everything what was stolen, studied in detail by those who worked on its conception, and betrayed to the user. literally "The Usurper of the Internet". Nothing more to say, the wait is over and these last 2 months and half were the last moments of agony of the great defender of the rights of the web explorer. rest in peace gigablast, i will always have you in my heart.

Brave search sucks. Their search results first serve large corporations, government sites just like Google does and their font is so dull is barely readable.

    [–]Forsaken_Music9346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it has a new link gigablast.org is the new official one the other gigablastsearchengine.org or .com are fake

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Gobble killed the Gigabla star...

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matt Wells, Gigablast, to be correct.

    [–]GroupNebula563 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They are open-source, so someone could easily restart it

    [–]Alex5097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to see them go as well. Big tech companies always sucks. However, I have been working on my engine. Making improvements. You can try it out at https://supremesearch.net Hope Gigablast comes back or have someone take over the project for him.

    [–]fdghdfjhojdh 0 points1 point  (1 child)

goverment shut it down, i think they didnt like it, thats just a theory tho, take it with a grain of salt

    [–]565gta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

someone should make a mastodon type federation derived cluster client & network & and following&followed pairset based user group derived 3 sectioned distributed cluster computing search client & server system network thats open source & libre

no one could destroy the function of any user groups per client hosted versions are the groups hosted versions, same for the network, and the protocol

hosted locally on clients, hosted at user group network level, hosted at network level and at protocol level; for every implementation of such

4 layers of federation, hosting, distributed system & cluster computing based server; group & client systems

i would like to see some scumbag destroy 4 layers of redunancy & the previous 4 ive listed, aka 8 layers of securation against corps & others

    [–]StackableRollerBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you still utilise gigablast through the way back machine?

    [–]TheMan2600[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

For those who have been on this site gigablast.org, I tell you that is a fake frontend of gigablast and its search results seems like to be from bing or google. Sorry but gigablast remains death.

    [–]NoProfessional8409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully, someone / group will help Matt revive the original search engine one day
