Update #2 []: Aspyr has released a hotfix for the second patch for Tomb Raider IV–V–VI Remastered which removes AI-generated vocals from the game.
"We've addressed this issue by removing all AI voiceover content, while retaining the improvements made in the previous update. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Please reach out to our customer support site with any issues."
Update #1 []: Françoise Cadol, the French actor who overdubbed the character of Lara Croft in the Angelina Jolie-led movies and lent her voice to the French versions of the original '90s games, has taken legal action against Aspyr Media following accusations that her voice was replicated using AI in the recent Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered (thanks, Game Developer).
Cadol says she became aware of the situation after the package was updated in August, and she noticed differences between the game and her original performances.
Cadol's legal team has filed a formal notice demanding that the collection be withdrawn from sale, and is also requested data on how many copies have been sold.
Cadol's lawyer, Jonathan Elkaim, said:
"You immediately notice that there's a very strong metallic impact, it's very choppy, lacking in intonation, or on the contrary, poorly performed. But the timbre is reminiscent of Françoise's."
Original Story: Tomb Raider IV–V–VI Remastered has given Lara Croft fans both old and new a means of reconnecting with her past adventures, but recent updates to the collection have attracted criticism from some sectors of the community due to the alleged use of Generative AI to produce new spoken dialogue.
Tomb Raider fan account @infinitytombraider.bsky.social spotted something was amiss when the latest patch went live. It was suggested that restored lines in the French version of the game were created using Gen AI based on the voice of Françoise Cadol, Lara Croft's voice actor.
The account later claimed that Cadol was not asked to record any new voicelines, and "did not give her consent for any subsequent use of her voice, especially with AI. She only recently found out about the remasters."
The furore has reached the point where Paul Douglas, who co-created the original Tomb Raider with Toby Gard in 1996, has decided to add his own opinion to the mix:
This isn't an issue that is unique to Tomb Raider, by any means. French voice actors have recently launched the #TouchePasMaVF (“Don’t Touch My French Version”) campaign in an effort to prevent their voice work from being used to train AI models.
We've reached out to Aspyr and will update this post if and when we hear back.

Always Aspyr with the low-effort work on a remaster. I'm always in dread when a remaster is announced that they might be working on it (and delighted when it's Nightdive instead!)
Why am I not surprised this is Aspyr? Disgusting.
@Grackler
Same. Was tempted by the Soul Reaver remaster, saw it was Aspyr, read up on it, discovered they added a day/night cycle without rebalancing or checking it didn't break the game. It does break the game and can't be switched off. Decided it was a hard pass. (Same with anything by Limited Run; that CDR debacle will never be forgotten.)
At this point, it's Night Dive or nothing. I've yet to play a Night Dive release and feel anything less than complete satisfaction. They are the top tier platinum standard which all companies should look up to.
@Sketcz Agreed; NIghtdive do such a fantasic job with remasters! A bit different as it's not 3D-era, western games like Aspyr/Nightdive; but M2 are typically good with Sega stuff. I've heard good stuff on Digital Eclipse more documentary-meets-remaster work too (Worms/Jeff Minter) but I've not had the chance to try those yet.
Aspyr are just barely serviceable at their best, and truly rubbish at their worst. I wish rights owners would stop using them (particularly Lucasarts with Star Wars games!)
Oh, you don't want to piss off the French, Phil. They're where Montreal learned it from, and they're worse.
@Grackler @Sketcz As the Embracer sycophant, I feel it is my duty to apologize for the failings of the house of Stubbs, but also to blame this on Jeff Fairhurst being a bad influence, and Phil Rogers being crap at reaource allocation
@Grackler
I played through the Jeff Minter collection, and it was exquisite. Lots of nice photos, videos, and write ups, giving some nice historical context to the man and his portfolio. Lots of scanned documents too. I saw it got some negative reviews from people who had no idea who Minter was, but for me it was exactly what I'd want from such a collection. Good shout - Digital Eclipse are great for these very old legacy collections. I eagerly look forward to more from them. The overall package conveys a love of and respect for the source material.
@Grackler
Like Sketcz, I can also wholeheartedly recommend the Digital Eclipse collections. They're real enthusiasts which is superbly reflected in the stuff they do.
@Sketcz I have several of their games on Switch and they always come with issues. Jedi Outcast and Republic Commando have their multiplayer modes outright removed, and KOTOR 1 and 2 came with game breaking bugs that took close to a year to fix. The remasters of Battlefront and Neverwinter Nights 2 are bloated to over 20 GBs for some reason, quadrupling the size of the originals.
Like you mentioned, the differences between Aspyr and Nightdive are like night and day. The Dark Forces remaster is treated with care and is crammed with toggable QOL changes and bonus content, while Aspyr just crammed their SW games into an emulator and called it a day.
@Grackler I thought the Tomb Raider remasters were well recieved compared to most of their other stuff but using Ai voice acting sucks
I’ve been debating getting their Tomb Raider remasters, but if they’re just cheaping out and not paying people then my decision is made. Glad to know I don’t need these now, lol.
@PKDuckman
Damn. I now have anxiety over them getting their hands on anything else. TR isn't the worst that could happen, but I keep thinking they're poisoning the well. If they botch a remaster, it's not like another company will remaster it again - that game is now forever tainted.
@HammerKirby That's because most of the work from the TR remasters are from the actual fan community who were brought on these projects then Aspyr themselves.
The problem with this being that because the fans are the ones trying to wangle Aspyr AND work on these at the same time, stuff like this happens, essentially the remasters for TR are received well in spite of Aspyr not because of them. You could almost call it self sabotage for cheaping out and using AI VA at this point.
That's a bummer. I was interested in buying this, but I will not be supporting it if they used AI.
Nothing wrong with the technique. What was wrong was not asking for her approval. Technically speaking she should be paid for those extra lines.
@Sketcz Nightdive and Digital Eclipse constantly work with Limited Run Games so you're supporting LRG depending on the game you're buying.
No guile no panache
I'm pretty sure they used even more Ai in those remasters. Many textures where done by gen Ai etc
TBH the only truly decent retro remake companies are Nightdive and M2.
Digital Eclipse are finally starting to get better, but still not in the others league just yet.
@Guru_Larry Lizardcube seem pretty good from the ones I have tried.
I think it's good she takes action as she's currently owed money for the extra lines.
Using AI to replicate the voice of one of the most famous French dubbing actresses is beyond stupid haha. They’re probably not even French and just assumed she was some random dubber from 30 years ago when in fact she’s still very active and well known today.
I do love the remasters though even if they broke the reversed camera in the first trilogy with the latest patch and never bothered to fix it.
@Sindayl To be fair they can't be expected to know every voice artist who's worked on the games.
@Sketcz Quake's broken Nightmare mode said hello and Nighdive made a mess of Blade Runner on release too. Nightdive are a B team, the others are C and D. There stuff is good, but could be a bit better. Hamster's Arcade archives are some of the best modern emulation work. They ported a number of games that don't work on MAME and their emulation has beaten M2 as well. Their versions of the two arcade Contra games are miles better than the rubbish M2 did for the Contra Collection. They fixed long standing issues with the emulation of Contra 1 as well.
Not surprising by this news both remakes where largely made by A.I. I suspect. A lot of the texture mistakes, seen in the modern mode, would suggest they were. Both remakes were largely made by fans, which is were the problems come from. I do hope the French actress gets a payout from them. I'm very much against A.I voice acting myself.
Fan project are often not up to a professional standard and lack legal over sight. The QA and legal team should have been catching this stuff. First thing they should have done is check the original voice over contracts and re-record the audio with new actors & actresses where needed or sign new deals.
Not many people have mentioned this, but in the modern mode of The times newspaper stage on the second collection. Two pictures on the wall, become one of the Magician Paul Daniels and the other becomes a picture of The Krankies. I do wonder if they got permission for both of those, again that I suspect would be an A.I trying to match pictures. Unless they did have their pictures in the Times paper office?
We stole your voice. Sorry for the inconvenience.
@slider1983 Was there not credits in the original games? If they had time to run voice samples through an AI, they probably had time to check who they were copying first. I don't know who this person is, but I see from this article and comments, they are quite a famous person.
Definitely sounds like something that, while fans may or may care enough to check, a professional company probably should've done legal diligence.
@KingMike I doubt they went to that trouble for localisation. That's a major problem as shown here but I don't get the impression the developers keep tabs on an actor or actress hired 30 years ago for a role.
Well good on Françoise for standing up to this. As I've said before, AI isn't necessarily the problem, but the people who use it is.
However, I feel there's an important question here that's been missed:
Does French Lara sound sexier than English Lara?
@slider1983 Seems like the trouble they've created for themselves is significantly worse than a Google search and an email would have been. No, odds are they were just trying to cut corners, save some money, and get away with it.
We should absolutely expect developers to perform their due diligence in such a simple area. They accepted money from the publisher and they expect to accept money from players. No need to make excuses for them — they chose to suck.
@dunk Make no mistake, they definitely wanted to save money by cutting corners but I doubt they know or care about regional voice actors they hire or keep tabs on their careers.
Glad to hear this VA stood up against this through legal action to send a message to the industry. Aspyr knows what they were doing and why. What a shame!
If you look at the steam patch notes, Aspyr says they removed, "unauthorized" AI generated content.
What a load of crap.
I used to really like Aspyr, back when it seemed like they did decent work. What a shame.
They're only sorry they got caught.
