Chapter 20 Understanding Things Well
1. understanding things well
ใ€€It is difficult to read Proverbs in a coherent manner, and it may seem that each verse is to be read and savored individually. However, after reading through these 20 chapters, I think of the importance of wisdom. For example, verse 1 says that a person who fails because he is drunk with wine lacks wisdom. Verse 2 says that those who offend those in authority, verse 3 says that those who are contentious, and verse 4 says that those who are in a hurry at harvest time, i.e., floundering around at the deadline, are all the same.
Also, those who are wise have the ability to express well what is in people's hearts. There is something about them that makes people say, "Yes, yes, that's what I wanted to say" (v. 5), grasping well the intentions of people's hearts. Also, we do not trust people easily. No one wants to be wronged. Therefore, they pretend to be kind, to be sincere, and they know that that is the way it is (v.6). However, a wise person knows the importance of living a life of integrity (v. 7), regardless of what others say. Just as a judge thoroughly examines things to discern truth from lies (v. 8), the invisible God sees through all the deceits and lies of men (v. 10). And this world may seem to be full of contradictions, but in reality it is because God's justice is working to be carried out. It is not that if good and evil fight, evil will win. It is the opposite. God, who created ears and eyes so that human beings can see and hear things and judge what is right, will also move society in a righteous way (v. 12).
2. live a life worthy of trusting God
If we live our lives believing that there is a God who does what is right, then we should live our lives accordingly. For example, verse 13, "Be diligent in your labors," and verse 14, "As I mentioned earlier, be aware of the nature of mankind, and be patient with him. In other words, human beings are stingy and bargain for things, but once they have them, they boast about them as bargains. Also, money lent is not returned. If you want to recover the money you loaned, you must prepare a plan to recover it from the beginning (v.16). If you cheat people, there will be payback (v.17). You should think things over before you do them. In other words, listen carefully to others' opinions, find a compromise, and make a feasible plan (v.18). Do not associate with people who are light-spoken (v. 19). Cursed is the person who mistreats his parents (v. 20). If you believe that there is a living God who does what is right, leave vengeance to God (v. 22). Even if you don't want to do something about it, God will take care of it. Even if you don't think you will be rewarded, don't be in a hurry to do something, don't panic. God is thinking about it. God hates deceit and lies (v. 23). If you believe that God, who does what is right, is alive, don't worry about unnecessary things, but leave them to God. Then, do what you have to do and walk faithfully (v. 24). Do not make unnecessary vows lightly (v. 25). We have a God-given spirit dwelling in us that works as our conscience (v. 26). If we believe that there is a God who does what is right and just, that he rules the world, and that we have a God-given spirit, or conscience, then listening to what God says to us will help us build a solid tomorrow. I pray that today will be another good day.
<Quiz Corner
First, yesterday's quiz. Who is the apostle who uses the word "conscience" the most? (1) Paul, (2) Peter, and (3) John. The answer was (1) Paul. Conscience is said to be a Pauline term, used 20 times in Paul's letters and twice in Acts. It is also used five times in Hebrews and three times in the First Epistle of Peter. Now for today's Bible quiz. In Palestine, what type of stone was generally used mainly as a weight stone to weigh things? (1) Limestone, (2) Bronze, (3) Jewelry. I wish you a good day.
