"The stuff that you go to see on Facebook and Twitter is created by people you know or celebrities that you wish you knew. They're about people. Tumblr, on the other hand, is a little bit more like your TV, which really isn't about people you know. It's about the stuff that you love." — Tumblr CEO and founder David Karp (david), quoted from a 21-minute video interview with Bloomberg Businessweek.
Embedding Tumblr Posts:
Tumblr offers embed codes to place a published post on any website that allows an HTML embed. From the Desktop Dashboard, simply click the three-dots icon and select "Embed" from the sharing menu. But what if that post isn't on your Dashboard right now? Try these tips.
- If it's not a post on your own primary blog, make sure that you are following the blog to get the embed code from a post URL.
- Note the post ID number in the post's URL:
http://www.davidslog.com/98260713170
- Now increase the post ID's last digit by one:
98260713171
- Go to the Desktop Dashboard at
https://www.tumblr.com/dashboard then add
/2/98260713171 to the end of the web address and go to the new URL.
- The post appears in your Desktop Dashboard.
- Click the three-dots/ellipses icon on the lower right of the post and select Embed for the embed code.
Oct. 6, 2015 Update: Android dropped Daydream Mode.
Does Your Android Daydream About Tumblr?
Android's Daydream setting turns your phone or tablet into a photo slideshow while charging the device. You can show images from Tumblr with Daydream if you have the Tumblr app installed.
On your Android device, go to Settings. Access the Display settings. You might immediately find "Display" under "Settings," or you might need to tap "Device" or "My Device" to reveal "Display" settings. From "Display," turn on the Daydream option. If you need to, tap Daydream again to show its settings. Then select Tumblr from the list of Daydream settings. Finally, if you see this option, tap "Select dream time" or "When to daydream" or tap the three vertical dots to reveal "Select when to daydream." Choose among "While docked," "While charging" or "Both" (also labeled as "All"). If you want to see what the display will look like, tap either "Preview" or "Start Now."
Be sure to let your device go to sleep while charging and/or docked, rather than turning it off using the power button. While your Android device idles, Daydream will display a panning and zooming slideshow, drawn from Tumblr Staff Picks.

Tumblr CEO: Focusing on storytelling and self-expression
Is Tumblr the most expressive social platform? Founder and CEO David Karp reckons so. He says Tumblr is the place where people can reveal their true identity and creativity. And while he admits that other sites like Facebook and Twitter have been pivotal in bringing about social and political change, Karp argues that Tumblr — owned by Yahoo — has a different, more reflective, role to play.

Tumblr-to-Pinterest Sharing
Tumblr offers sharing to Pinterest from its post sharing menu on the Desktop Dashboard. On a photo or video post, click the three-dot/ellipses icon in the right-bottom corner. (If you're not seeing the icon for this sharing menu at all, you'll need to use Tumblr more to activate it.) Do you see this feature on your Dash?

unwrappingOct. 31, 2015 Update: Revert.io no longer offers free backups.Free, Daily Backups for Your Tumblr Blog:
Revert.io gives you free, daily backups for a single Tumblr blog. The service is by invitation only, but you can sign up for the wait list. Once registered and authorized with your Tumblr account, Revert automatically backs up all your posts — up to 60 gigabytes worth. Then, as the service backs up your blog, Revert offers you the latest versions, plus any changed versions for the last 30 days. To recover a post, use Revert's search to find the post, select a version by date and click Revert. You'll find a draft of the post among your Tumblr drafts. You can request backups on demand, and you get unlimited restores. Some limitations:You can only specify one Tumblr URL (for a primary or secondary blog) per Revert.io account.Revert does not back up your Tumblr drafts, likes, queue, blog appearance or theme — only published or private posts. You must roll back posts one at a time. If you do have some version of the original post, you might want to copy elements from the reverted draft to save any notes gained on the original post. Otherwise, publish the reverted draft then backdate it.Revert makes its own copies of your text, tags, links and images. While you can recover audio and video posts, Revert does not store copies of audio or video files. The service relies on links from hosts like Tumblr, YouTube, Vine, Vimeo and SoundCloud when reverting multimedia posts. If you don't caption or tag many of your photos, finding them from Revert search can be challenging. Also, I'd like to see a search by post date. For photosets, Revert saves all the photos but does not keep the layout order, so you may need to adjust the layout in the reverted draft.#revert#revert.io#tumblr backup#backup blog#backup#resources#tips#tumblr tips#updated#post

unwrappingRebloggedkateoplisFollow“As protests sparked by a grand jury’s decision not to indict Darren Wilson began spreading nationwide, furor was also growing in cyberspace, in the social-justice halls of Tumblr, a social-blogging platform dominated by users in their teens, 20s and early 30s. Their feeds were vivid mash-ups of articles, GIFs, cleverly labeled images, court documents, smartphone videos, stickers and cartoons, and their posts contained news about Ferguson, along with tidbits about identity, inequality, police abuse, racism, body shaming and more.”"There are more than 215 million blogs on Tumblr and, according to comScore, an analytics company, 50 percent of Tumblr users are from 15 to 34 years old. The company’s internal surveys show that 64 percent of users say that they care about social causes and look into them on Tumblr. These numbers suggest that millennials, who have long been pigeonholed as an apathetic bunch, have a strong interest in social issues — it’s just hidden from the eyes of their elders. …“You can create your own identity via Tumblr,” said Moya Bailey, 31, a postdoctoral fellow at Northeastern University in women’s studies and digital humanities. “I see many more diverse images on Tumblr than I see anywhere else. It’s one of the few places where I see fat people, trans women and trans women of color who are celebrated.” …Ms. Moore… recalled organizing a moment of silence in San Diego after Michael Brown was killed. Nearly 400 people attended the event — a number that’s large for the small and conservative San Diego, Ms. Moore said — and many others followed up with emails asking to participate in the future. “I was blown away at how engaged and how passionate people can be on Tumblr,” she said.”Millennials and the Age of Tumblr ActivismunwrappingFrom the Dec. 19, 2014 edition of The New York Times.See also: "No, Tumblr is not deleting posts about Ferguson" (via dailydot on Dec. 1, 2014)#tumblr activism#the new york times#reblog#ferguson#post
