I unironically believe that Galaxy Express 999 is better than Neon Genesis Evangelion. Evangelion only tackles one theme throughout while 999 expands on many different issues like freedom and its true nature, patriotism, kindness and its limits and different forms, love, family, eternal life and so much more. Evangelion is presented as deep but the ideas in 999 are more clearly presented and easier to understand, making them more accessible to people, and in my opinion it makes it more valuable as a result. Also, Evangelion doesn't have Maetel, which is a great loss, no foid in Eva could ever match her

>>98243 (OP)Well duh, of course it is. Many animes are better than NGE. Beating NGE in terms of writing (story and characters and other kinds of writing) isn't exactly some amazing or difficult accomplishment.
And even Hideaki Anno's previous anime Nadia is in many ways superior to NGE (although it too suffers from some cringe-and-stupid moments like NGE does, but there's less of that and there's none of that over-the-top teenage-angst soap-opera drama NGE is so saturated with) even if it's less "sophisticated" vs some aspects of NGE's writing. I'd much rather watch Nadia than NGE.
I saw NGE a few times long ago (first time in 2001 if I recall correctly, last time not sure but sometime between 2007 and 2011 probably) and never feel any reason to watch it again, partly because it contains so much annoying and dumb stuff but mostly simply because I know there are so many other animes that are more fun and more interesting.

It's super cool when you're the same age him or younger, but as you get older it stops feeling special because you start seeing it more for what it really is and start seeing through the cheap tricks they used to make it appealing to children and make it seem more special than it actually is.
That's the case with lots of other animes too of course. Those that doesn't happen with, that weren't made like that, that don't try to trick its viewer, and aren't less than what they appear to be, are the good ones that one can still watch as an adult.

999 not only asks "what is it to be a human" but also "is it worth it and if so how". Evangelion is more of a "i'm human big sad".
