Remember: it's important to use assets that are obviously placeholders during game dev.
A screenshot from the game I'm developing - it uses simple colored squares (to denote where future assets will go) but more importantly there are four white rectangles with the text "HEWWO? Mr. Obama?" written on them.

Oh, hey. Visa and Mastercard now say you can't pay for WoW. Magic the Gathering. FFXIV. DnD. Lord of the Rings. Because they're all "adult" content against their ToS just for being "fantasy". Let that sink in. Spread this like wildfire and have people in those circles call them. No quarter.
Woke up to quite the update on this. I had been in contact with Payment Cloud about getting their service and they waited until now to hit me with the image below. Again, stringing me along instead of being upfront. They had seen my website multiple times before this.
An image taken from an e-mail from Payment Cloud to me. They list prohibited adult work, one of which just includes "Fantasy" which is as wide as cat ears and fairies. We are so cooked.

And of course, Procedural Generation / Generative Methods are well tread fields of making a computer make things (often without any external data scraping, or deep learning!) that are super hard to talk about now without worrying that someone will conflate with the very narrow domain of "GenAI"
I hate AI, but I think we should think more critically about blanket-condemning anything that could be ai. Big genAI, which steals copyrighted works, poisons our collective knowledge, and consumes unconscionable amounts of energy is BAD. On-device ai that lets me search my photos for dogs is FINE.

I actually had to explain to someone recently that the AI that tells enemies in video games how to react to player inputs is NOT genAI and has existed for literal decades. they genuinely had no idea there was a difference. this shit has poisoned the well so bad.

this is particularly inconvenient when your art medium was called "AI" before LLMs and image generators took over the term and so people look at 10 year old documentation and see the word "AI" and flip out
people see the word "AI" and go absolutely fucking berzerk. they'll see someone be like "huh i tried using AI, and it kinda sucks" and they'll freak out about how they touched the Unclean Tool and now they're Forever Unclean. im not sure that that's healthy!

I think that as an indie game dev without a large publisher, your target audience is not gamers in general, it is sickos. It's hardcore sickos that will be diving the depths of your genre and finding your game, and it is sickos who will be spreading it. Please the passionate, not the masses.

More sage advice from Issue 10 of Input Magazine, on the importance of story planning. Of course these days all big game developers do this.
The very first stage in writing an adventure is to work on the general story line and draw a rough map of all the locations. This then forms the basis of the whole program. It is essential to work out the whole story before you start programming. If you don’t, you’re likely to have lots of difficulty with many bugs and loose ends to tie up.

I have no real thoughts on the Homestuck thing other than "I can't believe 'Homestuck is my favorite anime' is going to be a true statement and not just a meme"
After a bit of reading, I think "if I go to a Twitch stream, and I see an ICE ad, I'm not watching or streaming to Twitch until they pull the ads" is both more reasonable and closer to the original point than the take that's being passed around.
Like, yes, "omg someone doesn't know that streamers don't control the ads" is the easy take to walk away with and fun to dunk on - the more nuanced point that streamers might need to band together to pressure twitch into rejecting Gestapo Dollars is much harder to swallow.
Like, if I saw an ICE ad on Twitch, I'd: * Pull all my subs * Deactivate affiliate * Not watch twitch until the ads went away I know it's hard for people who depend on the money to live, but as someone who can, the least I can do is send the message in the way corps understand - the bottom line.

Understanding why this would be a thing someone would write without a shred of irony makes it hurt my soul even more. (The worst part is that I personally think this should be considered true and a strong argument *against* LLMs being used to "replace workers")
This is an insane thing to write about game development. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/28/a...

Most experts acknowledge that a takeover by artificial intelligence is coming for the video game industry within the next five years, and executives have already started preparing to restructure their companies in anticipation.
After all, it was one of the first sectors to deploy A.I. programming in the 1980s, with the four ghosts who chase Pac-Man each responding differently to the player's real-time movements.
