With temperatures dropping to the high teens, light rain and gusty winds, there were plenty of umbrellas and coats among the tinsel and Santa hats at Newcastle Permanent Carols by Candlelight at Speers Point Park last Sunday, December 9.
About 2000 carol stalwarts ready for any weather with umbrellas, tarps and shelters flocked to the shores of Lake Macquarie to watch Australian Idol winner Casey Donovan, ARIA award-winning star Jenny Morris and Sydney singer-songwriter Joe Moore perform Christmas classics.
Lake Macquarie City Council cultural development and events officer Rebecca Prince said the crowd's Christmas spirit wasn't dampened by the rain.
However, she said the closing fireworks had to be scaled back due the bad weather.
"They will be back bigger and better for Australia Day," Ms Prince said.
"We'll make it up to everyone in January."
