A downtown Durham staple is bringing a taste of its wood-fired pizza to Raleigh.

After more than a decade in business, Pizzeria Toro is opening a second location at Seaboard Station.

It’ll be a neighbor to The Common Market, a popular Charlotte-based deli and market set to open early next year.

“Everything just came together in the right way,” chef and partner Gray Brooks said in a release sent to The News & Observer. “We’ve always been really picky about where to put another Toro, which I guess is pretty obvious, after 13 years. But when this opportunity came up, it just felt right.

“We love the neighborhood, and the space — it’s the garage from a former trucking company. Just this really high, airy space, it felt like it wanted to be a Toro as soon as we walked in. And we were already fans of Common Market, so sharing a building with them just felt like the right fit.”

Pizzeria Toro originally opened its doors in 2012. Since then, it’s been a go-to for classic and creative toppings.

The restaurant has been in the national spotlight when it was on Yelp’s list of “Most Unique Pizzas Across the Nation” and when chef Marla Thurman became a “Chopped” champion, The News & Observer previously reported.

Next summer, foodies will get to have the flavors of the “seasonally driven wood-fired pizzeria” in Raleigh — but with some changes.

“[The] menu will have a lot of the same items, but won’t necessarily directly reflect the Durham menu,” Brooks told the N&O, explaining that it’ll be shaped by what their team gets from local farmers in the Triangle.

“This, operating a restaurant outside of Durham, is gong to be a new challenge for us, one that we’re really excited about,” Brooke said. “And we’re super excited and lucky to have the opportunity to do so in Raleigh.

“We’ve always love the food scene over here. There are just so many talented chefs, so many great staffs. We’re stoked to have the opportunity to be a small part of it. I think we’ll fit in pretty well.”

An official opening date has yet to be announced. The new Pizzeria Toro will be at 807 Halifax St.
