The Capital City pool will host about 500 swimmers from 3 states next Saturday and Sunday in the Midwestern AAU Age Group championships and Open Senior Men and Women's swimming meet. The program will bring together some of the best swimmers in Nebraska, South Dakota, and northwestern Iowa. It is the swim meet of summer. Almost every AAU record will be in jeopardy if the swimmers keep up their present pace.
Last week, for, example, '17 marks fell in the relay championships at Grand Island. Most of those record-crackers are entered in Saturday's meet at Muny. Host Lincoln Swim Club will have the largest of entries--about 100. Other large teams will come from Omaha, Sioux City, S.D., and Shenandoah, la. Muny will be closed to the public for both days of the meet.
Saturday's preliminaries begin at a.m. and finals at 5 p.m. On Sunday, preliminaries will start at 9 p.m. and finals at 3 p.m. At last year's meet, also staged Muny, 33 records were broken.
LSC members had their hands in of these. Among these were a quartet of LSC boys in the 11 and 12-year-old group who surpassed the national record in the medley relay team. Sonny Calta of Omaha South after his 74-yard punt return which gave the South a 7-6 victory over the North in the first Shrine Bowl- Star game last year. Calta's inspiration derived from an airplane flight and visit to the Twin Cities unit of the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children in Minneapolis, which serves Nebraska.
All proceeds from the game go to this hospital. Last year's game in Omaha earned $48,407.40 for the hospital. The second game in Nebraska's Memorial Stadium in Lincoln Aug. 20 is aiming to top this figure. The 1960 crop of graduated high school stars, 33 on each team, will have the same inspiration as Calta had -as did Rod Brethower of Imperial when he kicked the gamewinning extra point after Calta's run.
The two squads will fly to Minneapolis on a short break from the training camp grind which begins Aug. 8. The South squad, accompanied by coaches and Shrine officials, will leave Lincoln by chartered airliner on Friday, Aug. 12. The team is scheduled to leave in the morning, spend several hours at the hospital visiting the children, and return in the evening.
The North will make the same trip on Saturday, Aug. 13. The trip is similar to that made by the college all-star squads which play in the New Year's Day Shrine EastWest game in San Francisco -the daddy of the Shrine charity games. The college stars, mostly all-Americans, visit a hospital before their game. All leave with a great desire to do their best.
Calta's example confirms that the Nebraskans- -mostly all-state players-feel the same.
