PSA - DON'T INSTALL KB5046687/KB5046705 (defective update) #1012

@Kiki79250CoC

Description

@Kiki79250CoC

I write a report here to point out that the latest ESU update breaks a lot of stuff (including Supermium, Firefox, Edge, Discord, ...), so I would recommend to not install it on your system.

This problem is not unique to my machine, a lot of people reports the same issues after installing that update package.

22

I'm aware this is not really a Supermium issue, but I judge important to warn people that install those kind of updates to refrain from doing it until a solution is found or a revised update from Microsoft is released.

ISSUE CLOSURE : The December 2024 updates (KB5048695/KB5048676) resolved the issues.

Had the same problem here. Even reinstalled Windows 7, and same problem showed up. Guess I have to downgrade back to the October security patch.

Question, what Firefox is this and why is it pink?

Updates KB5046661 and KB5046639 in Vista also break browsers, even the sidebar stops launching. Who has Win 8 check it out, I don't have it, I'll check it out in Win 8.1.

I have 8.1. I'm gonna check right now.

8.1 has no problems with the latest update. I uninstalled the latest update and I'm going to hide it for now, re-applying the October patch. Thanks for warning us about Vista, I literally reinstalled it 2 days ago due to .NET Framework update installation issues (that didn't get fixed).

0xc0000142 error it seems. Maybe they sent a "bad" DLL...

I am doing a system trace before and after installing the kb5046705 update, it only has files from this month, it will be easier to find the culprit.

Once it is found I think we can just backup the good file from the previous update and then copy it back after the update.

Trace report, there are a lot of files, it will be hard to figure out which one caused the failure.

Hmm, interesting, Firefox 115ESR doesn't work as well, but r3dfox 128ESR works fine. I wrote wrong about gadgets, they work as well as IE.

And I have no issues on a Simplified Chinese Windows 7 with these updates (I have no other setup that actually uses ESU updates). Does anyone have Supermium dumps available?

IE11 update 2024-11 KB5046630 works for me on all win7 devices
KB5046687 indeed killed all browsers except ie11; tabs were just crashing. friefox, edge, supermium. luckily it could be uninstalled without a hassle.
lets see what more intelligent people will find out and how to fix KB5046687 on win7

Hello guys, I got a question that I hope you can help me, I still use Windows 7 (Pro) original and I could install all the "ESU security updates" until 08/10/2024. this one (Windows Embedded Standard 7: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=windows%207%20standard. But I dont use Windows server 2008 R2, actually i never use it, but my question is... can I install all these kind of updates in windows 7 professional without thoubles or do I have to use 100% a windows sever 2008 r2 to get all these updates? and if so I have to use the server. Is there any other method that I can use to get the Windows Embedded Standard 7's last updates (November/December)?

Windows Server 2008 R2 is just Windows 7 with a different set of installed programs and features, as in, simply another edition of Windows 7; the build is still NT 6.1, build 7601. You can easily install these updates on regular Windows 7 by changing WU ESU Patcher to patch as Server 2008 R2 instead of Windows Embedded Standard 7. The latter lost support after the October Patch Tuesday, thus x86 versions of Windows 7 are no longer supported. Weird to say, but if you want x86 support, move to Vista, as Server 2008 (not R2) has a x86 version.

That's so awesome, How can i change WU ESU patcher to patch as Server 2008 R2 instead of Windows Embedded Standard 7? (Is there any app or command to change it?) I used Win 7 pro x64 bit edition, so you're saying octuber is the last update Windows Embedded Standard 7 will receive and it wont get more update far from octuber?

1. If you've already patched to Windows Embedded Standard 7 using a batch script, you can just use that and change the OS to Windows Server 2008 R2.

2. Yes, Windows Embedded Standard 7 lost support in October, so even if updates are released, they will only be available for Server 2008 R2, which is x64 only (hence no 32-bit support). However, as I said earlier, it's the same build (NT 6.1.7601), so the updates are compatible with regular 7.

Ok I've been looking a way to change WU ESU Patcher to patch as Server 2008 R2 instead of Windows Embedded Standard 7, but I couldn´t find anything, I've followed the steps to activate bypass in win 7 pro: https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/bypass-windows-7-extended-security-updates-eligibility.80606/ installing some uptades that the articles said, but it doesnt say anything about switch WU ESU Patcher to patch as Server 2008 R2 instead of Windows Embedded Standard 7, what are the windows server 2008 r2's updates I sholuld install in my pc to start getting rest of it?

AlfCraft07

AlfCraft07 commented on Dec 15, 2024

@AlfCraft07

Yeah, I mean that.

Even if it doesn't say that, you must do it. If you patch as WES7, you won't see updates newer than October 2024 since that lost support, while you will see the update if you patch as Server 2008 R2. Then just patch to that and check for updates, you will see the December one along with the November .NET Framework update. Idk if I can send the zip here.

You should find everything here up to November:
https://hackandpwn.com/windows-7-esu-patching/

Then you just need the 2024-12 update from here:

The 2024-12 update will get offered to you through Windows Update if you patch. The .NET Framework update from November will be offered as well, however it may not install, if that is the case, hide it and install the October one, that works fine.

I see you have the latest Servicing Stack update KB5039339 installed, so that's okay.

Use KB947821-v34 (System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 October 2014) to repair broken Windows Update components, then check on Windows Update for any missing updates.

Reinstall the latest Cumulative update.

After reinstalling the Cumulative update, restart your computer and then check for updates again in Windows Update to ensure everything is up to date.

I figured out the issue now, this KB2670838 update contains some 3D acceleration updates which conflicts with the 3D acceleration settings within VirtualBox and produces a very similar issue as the November Quality Rollup update.

To be sure, use fully updated Windows 7 with latest VirtualBox. It also works on VBox 6.0, that I use on my Windows 2k thru 7 PC as there 3D accel doesn't work on VBox on versions that don't support 3D-accelerated VBoxVGA.

If you patched to 2008 R2, apply update KB5016892 and then search for updates on Windows Update. It will be easier and faster.
