The image is a political cartoon by RebelPepper, depicting a Uyghur family, consisting of a man, a woman, and a child, standing behind a barbed wire fence. The family is holding a blue flag with a white crescent and star, symbolizing the East Turkestan independence movement. Surrounding them are red surveillance cameras and gun barrels, emphasizing the oppressive surveillance and violence they face. The background is a dark red, adding to the sense of danger and oppression. The text context reveals that this cartoon was created to voice support for the Uyghur people facing issues with reeducation camps in 2018. Initially, the flag was present, but it was removed upon editorial request to avoid supporting independence movements, reflecting a broader policy of supporting human rights but not independence movements.
