Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the southeast quarter.

At 10 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Tapah was centred about 170 kilometres west-southwest of Hong Kong (near 21.9 degrees north 112.6 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour across inland Guangdong.

Tapah has made landfall over Taishan, Guangdong. It will then enter inland Guangdong and move away from Hong Kong gradually. Locally, gale force winds are still affecting many places, and winds offshore and on high ground are reaching storm force. Rainbands of Tapah will continue to bring heavy squally showers to the Pearl River Estuary at first today. The Gale or Storm Signal, No. 8 will remain in force at least until 1 p.m.. Depending on the degree of weakening of local winds, the Observatory will assess the time of issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3. in the afternoon.

Seas are very rough with swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports. Under the combined effect of spring tide and storm surge, flooding may occur over parts of the low-lying areas in Hong Kong. A high water level of about 3 metres and 3.3 metres above Chart Datum were respectively recorded at Tai O and Tsim Bei Tsui, about 0.6 metre above normal. Members of the public should take necessary precautions.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island, Ngong Ping and Tap Mun were 88, 85 and 81 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts exceeding 103, 140 and 103 kilometres per hour respectively.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 8 Signal)

1. Complete all precautions in your home. Lock all windows and doors, insert reinforced shutters and gates if they are available. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish as soon as possible.

2. Do not stand near windows on the exposed side of your home. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter, should windows be broken.

3. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

4. Owners of neon signs should switch off the electricity supply to the signs.

5. Please listen to radio or watch TV for the latest weather information broadcast. You can also browse the Hong Kong Observatory's website and mobile app for the information.

Rainstorm Warning BulletinUpdated at 04:55

Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal Special Announcement issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 4:55 a.m.

The Rainstorm Warning Signal is now Amber. This means that heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 30 millimetres in an hour, and is likely to continue.

There will be flooding in some low-lying and poorly drained areas. People who are likely to be affected should take necessary precautions to reduce their exposure to risk posed by the heavy rain and flooding.
