Referee Shawn Smith told a pool reporter during the weather delay of the ejection of Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter, “One of the officials observed him spitting on an opponent.” Smith also said to the pool reporter: “It’s a disqualifiable foul in the game. It’s a non-football act.”
The game is scheduled to resume at 11:30 p.m. Eastern time. The Eagles and Cowboys players are to return to the field to warm up beginning at 11:15.
The game has been suspended because of lightning in the area. Both teams are leaving the field with 4:44 remaining in the third quarter and the Eagles leading the Cowboys, 24-20, at Lincoln Financial Field.
The game has its first defensive stop and its initial turnover. Cowboys running back Miles Sanders lost a fumble on a first-down carry from the Philadelphia 11-yard line. The turnover came one play after Eagles safety Reed Blankenship was penalized for an illegal hit on an end-zone incompletion. Sanders had a 49-yard run earlier on the drive.
Eagles kicker Jake Elliott connected on a 58-yard field goal as the two offenses continued to score on every possession. The Dallas defense did manage its first sack of the night before a third-down completion by the Eagles and then the field goal.
