Ideology
Ideologies determine what stance an interest group or political movement has on various laws. Each interest group has a set three or four standard ideologies. Political movements each have a single ideology. In certain circumstances, interest groups may also have other ideologies in addition or instead of these standard ideologies. Characters also have their own ideology, and the ideology of an interest group's leader influences that group's stances.
Standard ideologies[edit | edit source]
Below is the list of all standard ideologies found in interest groups. An ideology's stance towards all laws is neutral except where noted.

Non-starting ideologies[edit | edit source]
The following ideologies – except Pro-Slavery – are not present at the start of the game, but are standard for certain interest groups given certain conditions.
Corporatist ideology replaces
Pious for the
Devout when
Corporatism is researched.[1]
Egalitarian and
Liberal ideologies gain new stances on the Rights of Women laws when
Feminism is researched.[2]
Pro-Slavery ideology is added to the
Landowners if slavery of any kind is enacted, and it is removed from all interest groups some time after it is banned.[3]
Socialist ideology is added to the
Trade Unions when
Socialism is researched.[4]

Leader ideologies[edit | edit source]
All characters have an individual ideology. When a character leads an interest group, this ideology adds to – and may override – that interest group's default stances. The ruler's ideology also provides support or opposition to law changes.
Movement ideologies[edit | edit source]
Each type of movement has an ideology which determines its goals. Most movement ideologies are similar or identical to a regular interest group or character ideology.
Event ideologies[edit | edit source]
Event ideologies come into effect due to a journal entry or event chain. Some event chains add or remove standard ideologies from interest groups that normally would not have that ideology.
- Call for Women's Suffrage
This journal entry can begin after researching Feminism and
Political Agitation. When completed, it has an option to add the
Feminist ideology to the
Intelligentsia, or replace
Patriarchal ideology with
Modern Patriarchal on a random interest group, depending on which interest groups are in government at that time.

This journal entry can activate for Brazil after researching
Political Agitation, along with other conditions. When it activates, it triggers an event that replaces the
Reactionary ideology with
Modernizer for the
Petite Bourgeoisie. The Petite Bourgeoisie in South Asian countries and
East India start with Modernizer instead of Reactionary.

- Stamp Out Monarchism
This journal entry starts when replacing a Monarchy with a
Presidential Republic,
Parliamentary Republic, or
Council Republic. When completed, it has the option to replace all of
Paternalistic,
Scholar-Gentry,
Junker, and
Baronial ideologies with
Elitist for the
Landowners. A similar event may occur for
Brazil while the journal entry Magnanimous Monarch is active. The Landowners in a number of countries in the Americas start with Elitist instead of Paternalistic.

Completing this journal entry removes the Caudillismo from the

If Brazil fails this journal entry, the
Rural Folk gain the
Pro-Slavery ideology.
- The Modern Oligarchy
|
Available only with the Colossus of the South DLC enabled. |
This event can occur for Brazil during or after the journal entry The Positive Stage after reaching 50 Positivist influence. It replaces the
Stratocratic ideology with
Oligarchic for the
Landowners. A similar event occurs if Brazil fails the journal entry Magnanimous Monarch.

- The Nihilist Movement
While this journal entry is active, an interest group besides the Intelligentsia with an
Anarchist,
Communist, or
Vanguardist leader may gain the
Anti-Clerical ideology.
- The Red Army
This event can occur while the Council Republic law has been enacted. If the
Armed Forces are in government while their leader has the
Communist or
Vanguardist ideology, the
Loyalist ideology is replaced with
Proletarian. Additionally, the
Armed Forces are renamed to the Red Army.
